<!-- end left side bar --> <!-- story content : start --> A POLICE officer was cleared on Friday of two corruption charges involving two loans totalling $6,000. Staff sergeant Ganesan Maniam, 40, was cleared after a nine-day trial of corruptly getting the bribes in the form of $4,000 and $2,000 loans in 2003 from Mr Andrew Rajendran Govindasamy to show leniency when conducting raids on his two pubs. In acquitting him, District Judge Ch'ng Lye Beng said he had serious doubts about the evidence of the prosecution in certain areas. Ganesan had insisted that at no time did he receive nor try to obtain any money from Mr Andrew. Neither did he show leniency towards him during raids conducted against his two pubs, Club 7 Music Lounge and Ragawood. Even Mr Andrew claimed that he had given the alleged mony because Ganesan was a good friend of a mutual friend and not for any corrupt purposes. But Ganesan, who is defended by Mr Subhas Anandan and Mr Sunil Sudheesan, still faces a police summons charge of neglecting his duty by failing to report one Mok Chee Kin for selling pirated computer software in 2006. A pre-trial conference for the case has been fixed for Feb 4.
