By Elena Chong, Courts Correspondent
A WOMAN who stole a $10,979 diamond ring from a shop along Orchard Road was jailed a day and fined $10,000 on Wednesday.
Part-time nurse Gurmit Kaur, 46, pleaded guilty to the theft of the 18K white gold 1.1 carat diamond ring at Taka Jewellery at Orchard Plaza on July 15.
A Community Court heard that she had gone to the shop to have her chain repaired when she stole the ring.
The retail supervisor who attended to her only realised the ring was missing after Kaur had left the shop.
A closed-circuit television recording captured Kaur taking the ring from a serving tray. She was arrested the next day when she turned up at the store. The ring was found at her home.
She could have been jailed for up to three years and/or fined for theft.
