<!-- story content : start --> AN ASSOCIATE professor has been charged with molesting a 22-year-old student at Nanyang Technological University. Li Jinyan, 40, is accused of touching the left buttocks of the woman in a room at Block N4 on Sept 11 last year. He was charged a week ago and made his second appearance in court on Wednesday. His lawyer, Mr Gary Low, said he had just been briefed, and sought an adjournment to take instructions and make representations. If convicted, Li, who has a PhD in computer engineering, can be jailed for up to two years or fined or caned, or receive any combined sentence. A pre-trial conference is scheduled for May 10.

A FORMER Nanyang Technological University associate professor was cleared on Friday of molesting a 22-year-old student after he compounded the offence for $5,000. Li Jinyan, 41, who was originally charged with touching the buttocks of the Chinese national in a room at the campus on Sept 11 last year, also apologised in open court to the victim.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Stella Tan Wei Ling did not object to Li's application to compound the matter. The woman, who was in court, accepted the amount from Li through an investigation officer. She had also asked that the professor not approach her in future, which he agreed.

China-born Li graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from the National University of Defence Technology, Changsha, in 1991. Three years later, he obtained a Masters in Engineering in Computer Science from the Hebei University of Technology. Li's services with NTU has been terminated. He had been with the School of Computer Engineering since June 2007.

A FORMER associate professor of Nanyang Technological University (NTU) accused of outraging the modesty of a student was yesterday given a discharge amounting to an acquittal. The charge against Mr Li Jinyan, 41, was withdrawn after he offered $5,000 to the 22-year-old student, apologised to her and undertook to stay away from her. Until NTU fired him in July, he belonged to its School of Computer Engineering.

He had been accused of touching the student's buttocks in a room in one of the blocks on campus on Sept 11 last year. Deputy Public Prosecutor Stella Tan Wei Ling told the court that the prosecution was agreeable to his application to compound the matter for $5,000 and an apology. She further noted that the victim had asked him not to approach her in future.
