A SIX-YEAR-OLD BOY, who was reported missing since last Wednesday, was found dead in a canal near Block 44 on Bendemeer Road on Wednesday morning. A man has been arrested, said police. The boy, Muhammad Nor Rashidy Bin Rahmat, was last seen at his home in Block 65, Kallang Bahru on Nov 18 at about 6 pm, said police, who made an appeal for information on his whereabouts on Tuesday. The boy's aunt, Ms Nur Liana Amin, 21, told Berita Harian that a man came and took him downstairs at about 3pm last Wednesday. That was the last time she saw her nephew, whose nickname is Edy. Ms Nur said the man and his wife, who live in Bukit Merah and are known to the family, would come at about 11am daily to take the boy to his nursery and pick him up later.

Last Wednesday, the day Edy went missing, the man's wife was taken away by police for questioning over drug offences, said Ms Nur. When the man did not return the boy at the usual time, Ms Nur said she called the man, who told her that the boy was with him and they were on their way back. But they did not show up. The boy's frantic grandmother, Madam Asmah Asmoneh, called the man and told him to immediately send the boy back. On Friday morning, the man turned up at the flat, saying Edy was coming up shortly. He then left. When the boy failed to show up, the family called the man repeatedly but could not reach him. They later made a police report.

THE decomposed body was fully-clothed and stuffed in a trolley bag and zipped. Intensive police investigations led to the arrest of the man in a hotel at Westerhout Road in Geylang. The suspect ,a 31-year-old man, believed to be the boy's babysitter, has been arrested for murder. Residents said they saw police leading him from Block 44 to the crime scene. Addieriz Md Said, a resident, said: "This morning I saw four CIDs bring a Malay guy with a strip of leather ... moving off from my house under my block, to the restaurant, to the crime scene. "But I didn't know what was happening and I just followed to see. He was wearing a white shirt, white pants and was a bit plump and had shoulder-length hair." Police have classified the case as murder, which carries the death penalty.

By Zul Othman, TODAY | Posted: 04 December 2009 0640 hrs

SINGAPORE : With investigations still ongoing, prosecutors yesterday applied for a week's extension before going ahead with the trial of Mohammad Johan Rashid, 31, who is accused of the murder of a six-year-old.

He is being held at the Central Police Division and will appear in court again on Thursday for a trial date.

Mohammad Johan made headlines last week when he was charged in court for the alleged murder of Muhammad Nor Rashidy Rahmat, also known as Edy.

Mohammad Johan had been hired about a month ago by Edy's family to take him to and from school.

When the boy did not return home on Nov 18, his grandmother filed a police report a few days later.

An islandwide search ensued, and Mohammad Johan was arrested at a Geylang hotel on Nov 25.

Edy's decomposed body was found stuffed into a bag by the bank of the Kallang River later that day. - TODAY
