Man on graft, cheating charges

<!-- end left side bar --> <!-- story content : start --> A TECHNICAL officer appeared in court on Friday on charges of corruption and attempted cheating. Nor Hisham Abu Bakar, 37, attached to the Armour Training Institute of the Singapore Armed Forces as a maintenance agent, allegedly obtained a loan of $400 from Mr Ang Young Hui in return for giving him further opportunities to provide services at the SAF camps in November 2008. Sometime in January last year, he allegedly offered a bribe to a logistician sergeant of the Sungei Gedong Camp to help him process the quotations submitted by one of the subcontractors.
He was also charged with three counts of trying to cheat subcontractors of between $1,300 and $3,000 in 2008 by promising them that he could award them with works in the camp when he was in no position to do so. Hisham, represented by Mr Tito Isaac, will be back in court for a pre-trial conference on May 6. If convicted of corruption, he faces a fine of up to $100,000 and/or a jail term of up to five years. Attempted cheating is punishable with up to 3 1/2 years and a fine.
