Man on graft charges

AN OWNER of a transport company was charged on Wednesday with 18 counts of corruptly giving bribes totalling $17,500 to a former welfare programme coordinator in return for his help to get a contract. Ng Chew Chuah, 39, of Ming Chuan Transportation & Coach Service, allegedly gave the bribes to Mr Lau Yeow Hui alias Eric, then employed by Society for the Physically Disabled (SPD), for his assistance in procuring a contract to provide transportation services to SPD.
The alleged offences occurred between October 2005 and March 2007. Mr Lau, 32, was fined $10,000 and ordered to pay a penalty of $17,500 last month for corruption. Ng told the court that he wanted to engage a lawyer. He will return to court next Wednesday. If convicted, he faces a fine of up to $100,000 and/or a jail term of up to five years on each charge.
