AN ASSISTANT manager of a fastfood restaurant was jailed for 14 weeks on Monday for cheating a National Environment Agency (NEA) senior technical officer.
Fong Wei Yang, 24, had pleaded guilty last week to two charges of cheating Koh Gan Pore of $1,000 each time and trying to cheat another NEA officer Mohamad Santosa Suratim of $10,000 in 2009.
A court heard that Fong conspired with Thuraisamy Senthi, a technical officer attached to the mechanical maintenance unit of Tuas South incineration plant, to cheat the two men, who were under investigation by the anti-graft agency for collecting bribes from contractors.
Initially, Fong claimed that he was a monk and later a Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau officer named Tan Kim Ho or Ah Tan. Thuraisamy allegedly claimed to be David James, Ah Tan's supervisor.
Both deceived Koh and Mohamad Santosa into believing that they knew about their corrupt dealings and demanded money from them to favourably influence the purported investigations carried out by the bureau.
Koh agreed to the demands and paid them a total of $9,000 over five occasions.
Fong admitted that he received a total of $2,300 while the balance was given to Thuraisamy or used to settle their gambling debts.
Koh committed suicide in October that year, 10 days after investigations started.
