A man who damaged the windscreen of a motorist's car in a road rage incident was sentenced to one week's jail on Friday. Arivalakan Narayanan Kanapathy, 55, admitted to mischief by hitting the front windscreen of civil servant Mervyn Lau Jun Ming's car at the open space carpark of Block 117 Bishan Street 12 at about midnight on May 1, 2011. The damage cost $1,853.

A magistrate's court heard that Mr Lau, whose girlfriend was seated in the front passenger seat, was driving along Bishan Street at about 11.45pm on April 30 that year when he noticed a van tailgating his car. The van's driver flashed his high beam behind him.

He recalled cutting into the driver's lane but he claimed to have signalled his intention before doing so. Arivalakan had alleged that the driver had cut into his lan abruptly without signalling.

Arivalakan subsequently followed the car into the Bishan carpark where he parked his van in front of the vehicle. He alighted and walked towards the victim's car before using the back of his hand to rap the front windscreen, causing a crack mark. When he realised that the crack mark was caused by his gemstone ring, he apologised to the victim and offered to make restitution.

The Caucasian Bentley driver who allegedly smashed the windscreen of a Mercedes-Benz has been revealed to be the Royal Bank of Scotland's head of credit structuring and repackaging for the Asia-Pacific.

According to a Straits Times report, a spokesman for RBS confirmed on Friday that Mr Stefan Masuhr, the bank's head of credit structuring and repackaging for the Asia-Pacific, had been involved in the incident which took place on the Central Expressway on Tuesday.

36-year-old female Mercedes driver, Madam Wang, had been driving on the Central Expressway (CTE) and was turning into Braddell Road when a blue Bentley suddenly overtook her. The Bentley then screeched to a halt, forcing Madam Wang to step on her brakes.

According to Madam Wang, the man then got out of his car and stormed towards the Mercedes, shouting at her. He claimed that she had cut into his lane first, and so had retaliated by doing the same to her.

He then slammed his fist into her car windscreen multiple times so hard it cracked.

"Was this guy under severe stress at RBS or something? What a ridiculous case of overreacting!

"I really expected better behaviour from foreigners here, not this sort of hooliganism. Threatening a female driver, even though she might have been partly to blame, is never acceptable.

"It only makes a man look foolish for not being able to control his anger. And to think that this guy probably earns a huge salary as a senior bank executive, but he cannot control his temper?

"This guy should do some serious soul-searching for his outrageous behaviour."

Road rage man jailed for mischief

A van driver who cracked a motorist's windscreen when he knocked on it with his gemstone ring after a road rage incident was jailed one week for mischief Friday.

Arivalakan Narayanan Kanapathy, 55, went to confront Mr Mervyn Lau Jun Ming in a HDB carpark after he allegedly cut into his lane abruptly without signalling.

He parked his van in front of the 27-year-old's car at Block 117, Bishan Street 12.

Arivalakan got out and walked towards the victim's vehicle before using the back of his right hand to rap the front windscreen, causing a crack.

When he realised it had been caused by his ring, he apologised to Mr Lau and offered to make restitution.

The victim called the police after the incident at 12.06am on May 1, 2011.

Arivalakan pleaded guilty a week ago.

The court heard that Mr Lau, who had been with his girlfriend, noticed the van tailgating his vehicle and flashing its headlights behind him about 20 minutes earlier along Bishan Road.

Mr Lau then recalled cutting into the van's lane - but he claimed to have signalled his intention before doing so.

Nevertheless, Arivalakan continued to follow the car as he drove into the carpark.

Arivalakan has paid for the damage to Mr Lau's Peugeot, amounting to $1,853.

District Judge May Mesenas said the usual sentence for such road rage cases is custodial.

She noted that Arivalakan had also been convicted of violence-related offences in 2007.

"Although the victims were not hurt, it was just fortunate because they did not come out of the car. They locked themselves in," she said.

"This sort of behaviour cannot be tolerated. There has to be some kind of signal to be sent."

Arivalakan said he had just got a job and that his family would suffer if he goes to jail. The judge allowed him to commence his sentence on July 5 so he can settle his personal and work matters.

He could have been jailed for up to two years and/or fined.
