Man jailed for corruption

By Elena Chong

A FORMER owner of a company was jailed for 18 months on Monday for bribing a National Environment Agency officer in return for his help to get contracts for jobs at an incineration plant. Teo Hock Poh, 44, had admitted to five charges of corruptly giving between $12,423 and $18,339 to Koh Gan Pore, then a senior technical officer attached to Tuas South Incineration Plant, between 2007 and 2009.

Teo owned Metaldeo Engineering & Trading which exclusively provided repair, welding and plumbing services to the incineration plant. Between 2007 and last year, he gave about $169,000 to Koh, 47, who committed suicide late last year. The court heard that sometime in 2007, Teo was introduced to Koh through a distant relative.

He then asked Koh about getting contracts from NEA as he intended to set up his own business.
Koh suggested that he register a business and submit quotations to NEA. He also promised to help him get contracts, specifically repair jobs from the plant, and also provide technical support. In return, Teo was to give half the profits from his business to Koh.
