SINGAPORE - A man who attacked two cabbies on separate occasions was given a jail sentence of eight weeks today.
The Straits Times reported that 49-year-old Rashid Saman was also fined $1,500 for using insulting words on a police officer at the carpark entrance of Tampines Neighbourhood Police Centre (NPC) in May.
The carpenter cum deliveryman pleaded guilty.
It was heard in court that in the early hours of Feb 5 this year, Rashid boarded a cab driven by Mr Tan Koon Huat, 60, at Parklane Mall and asked to be driven to Geylang.
While in the taxi, he shouted vulgarities at Mr Tan. Somewhere along Beach Road, he also kicked the back of the driver's seat and punched him on the face.
He then tried to flee when Mr Tan stopped the taxi. The driver tried to stop him and punched him on the nose, then called the police when he saw that Rashid was bleeding.
In the second incident on May 26, Rashid, who had been drinking, fell asleep in the cab after telling Mr Yap Teck Hwa, 35, to go to Tampines. The paper reported that he had changed his mind several times and was unclear about where he wanted to go.
When they arrived at his destination in Tampines, he woke up only to say that he was unable to pay his fare as he did not have money.
Mr Yap called the police, who advised him to go to the nearest police station to settle the matter.
When they reached the Tampines NPC, Rashid woke up again, and started abusing the cabby. He also punched him on the cheek.
After two duty officers separated them, Rashid abused the officer who was interviewing him.
