Man in kidnap ruse charged
By Elena Chong
A MAN who allegedly claimed that he had been kidnapped in Manila and cheated his colleague here of $4,550 was charged in court on Thursday. Tay Beng Guan, 32, a funeral assistant, was in Manila on Aug 30 when he allegedly deceived Mr Simon Koh Eng Hock into believing that he was kidnapped in the Philippines and needed a $3,000 ransom to pay the kidnappers or he would be harmed.
He is said to have similarly deceived Mr Koh of another sum of $1,500 six days later. Both sums of money were transferred to Tay's POSBank account. On Sept 2, he also allegedly lied that he had not enough money for a phone call and induced Mr Koh to transfer $50 to his bank account. Bail of $10,000 was offered. His case will be mentioned on Oct 14. If convicted, he faces a jail term of up to 10 years and a fine on each charge.
