SINGAPORE - A man who caused grievous hurt to his then fiancee's cousin was sentenced to six months' jail and two strokes of the cane on Thursday .

The 27-year-old tattoo artist was ordered to pay $5,577 compensation to the victim, who suffered fractures in the nose area as a result of the assault in February this year (2015).

He had admitted to elbowing the 23-year-old student in his face and hitting and kicking his body at the void deck of Block 501 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 5 on Feb 22 this year.

Two other charges of hurting the victim were taken into consideration, one of which was using a lighted cigarette to burn the victim's ear and finger.

Investigation showed that the accused had first contacted the victim via Facebook on Feb 20 this year to meet up.

When he did not get any reply, he contacted the victim two days later. He told the victim he wanted him to apologise to his then fiancee, 19, now his wife, for allegedly having had an incestuous relationship with her.

The accused threatened the victim that he would make a police report if the latter did not "settle with him''.

The court heard that the accused, his fiancee and the victim met at the void deck of Block 549 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10 at about 2.40am. The accused then told the victim to kneel and apologise to the woman.

When the victim knelt down, the accused kicked and punched him. He also smashed his spectacles.

Thinking they heard the police, the accused pulled the victim to a roadside. There the three of them took a cab to Block 501 where the victim was further assaulted.

The accused kneed the victim in the ribs and hit his jaw using his elbows three times. He then took a lighted cigarette to burn the victim's left ear and finger.

The victim was warded for two days for his injuries.

District Judge Lim Tse Haw said he could not ignore the fact that the offence the accused had committed was very serious. He said the accused had used exceptional violence on his victim in a prolonged attack.

He noted that the accused did not desist from attacking the victim after the first attack. He said it was a vicious and sustained attack, which caused multiple injuries .

Given the substantial violence involved, Judge Lim felt that caning was appropriate in this case.

He allowed the accused to start his sentence on Oct 15 for him to spend time with his wife, who has just given birth.

The maximum punishment for the offence is 10 years' jail, fine or caning.
