An unemployed man was jailed for five years and ordered to be given 12 strokes of the cane on Tuesday for robbing a woman of her handbag in a lift.

Yahya Ghani, 45, admitted to robbing production worker Ang Yian Neo, 62, of her handbag containing $50 and an ez-link card valued at about $20 in a lift at Henderson Crescent on Nov 14, 2011.

The court heard that the victim was returning home from work when Yahya got into the same lift as her.

As the lift was going up, he told Madam Ang in English: 'Give me your handbag.' She immediately placed her handbag firmly under her armpit and stepped backwards.
