Lorry driver jailed 3 weeks for causing maid's death

By Khushwant Singh

A LORRY driver was jailed three weeks on Tuesday for driving negligently and causing the death of a maid at Admiralty Drive on the evening of March 29 last year. Evan Ho Cheah Yeung was also fined $500 for not wearing a seat belt then.

A district court heard that the lorry was turning right from Sembawang Drive into Admiralty Drive at about 7.40pm. The 31-year-old Singaporean stopped his vehicle to let oncoming traffic pass. He then made the turn but did not see Ms Asiwi.

A witness told police that the 41-year-old maid, who goes by one name, was crossing the single-lane road with the 'flashing green man' in her favour. She was run over and died on the spot of a fractured pelvis.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Kumaresan Gohulabalan asked the court to impose a jail term of at least four weeks as Ho had failed to keep a proper lookout for pedestrians. Defence counsel Jeeva Joethy said that Ho was extremely remorseful that a life had been lost and had expressed his desire to plead guilty since he was charged on March 18.

District Judge Wong Choon Ning agreed with the prosecution that a jail term was appropriate but also noted Ho's previously clean record and remorse. The driving disqualification will be for five years.
