IF YOU are tempted to buy your Chinese New Year barbecued pork in Malaysia to beat the escalating prices here, think again - about the rules governing the bringing of food items into Singapore.

The rules are not new, but the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority of Singapore (ICA) has sent out a reminder to travellers to be more careful. During festive periods, travellers tend to bring in excessive quantities of foodstuff or food from non-approved sources.

As this would affect clearance efficiency and cause inconvenience to other checkpoint users, travellers are reminded to obtain a permit from the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority (AVA) before importing food into Singapore.

Travellers who are unsure of their personal allowances for food items may visit the AVA website (http://ava.gov.sg/InformationForTravellers/BringFood/index.htm) before visiting or returning to Singapore.

Those who are in doubt are advised to declare the food items to the officers at the Red Channels when travelling through the checkpoints.
