Jailed for sex abuse

A 56-YEAR-OLD man was on Thursday jailed 11 years for sexually abusing a 12-year-old boy he had met in his neighbourhood. Thumbusamy Garunaidi pleaded guilty in the High Court to one charge each of performing oral sex on the boy, aggravated molestation and committing an obsence act with the boy. Three other charges, including one for showing a pornographic film to the boy, were taken into consideration during sentencing.
All the offences took place on July 15 last year. The boy first got to know him in 2008 at the shops in the neighbourhood where he lived. On several occasions, the odd-job worker, who is married and has a son, would join in when the boy played ball games with his friends. He also occasionally gave fruit to the boy. When they met each other by chance in the evening on July 15 last year, Thumbusamy told the boy to meet him at the void deck of his home.
