Jail term cut on appeal
By Selina Lum
A MARKETING manager convicted of kicking, pushing and spitting at three police officers has his 4 1/2 month jail term cut on appeal. Ning Xianglin, 42, turned violent after the officers arrived at his apartment in response to a call from his girlfriend that she had been beaten up. They found Ning lying on the sofa with his eyes closed. When they tried to wake him up, he spat in the face of one, pushed another in the chest, and kicked the third. He was later found to have 148mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood. The legal limit for driving is 80mg per 100ml. He was jailed a total of 4 1/2 months on and fined $2,000 by a district court in August last year. On Friday, his jail term was cut to 1 1/2 months after an appeal to the High Court. His lawyer, Mr Subhas Anandan, argued that Ning was intoxicated in his own apartment when he found himself suddenly restrained by police officers and forced to fend off what he perceived was an attack on him.
