SINGAPORE: Immigration and Checkpoints Authority officers foiled an attempt to help an immigration offender sneak out of Singapore at the Woodlands Checkpoint on Monday evening.

The 26-year-old Bangladeshi was found in the boot of a Malaysia-registered car.

During preliminary investigation, the 35-year-old driver, Cik Jamil, and his 24-year-old passenger, Hafiz, admitted to abetting the illegal departure of the Bangladeshi man.

Jamil claimed that he was approached by Hafiz in Malaysia to help transport immigration offenders out of Singapore illegally by hiding them inside the Hafiz's car.

The two would split up the S$400 reward equally if the attempt is successful.

They met an unknown Bangladeshi in Kranji Loop, where they were paid the fee before making the illegal attempt.

They were also instructed to pick up the immigration offender at the Kranji MRT Station.

The Bangladeshi illegal immigrant was sentenced to two months' imprisonment and five strokes of the cane Wednesday morning.

The driver and his passenger are currently under investigation by the ICA.

The car used in the commission of the offence has also been detained by ICA. - CNA/jy

I find it really funny that immigration offenders are usually detained when they are trying to sneak out of the country.
Shouldn't they be trying to capture immigration offenders when they are in the country or trying to sneak into the country?
