SINGAPORE - A Grab private-hire driver recently raked in a whopping $6,020.20 in earnings over the span of one week.
An image of the driver's supposed earnings statement from 9 to 15 January was reshared onto the Facebook page of Beh Chia Lor, known for covering local stories on traffic and road safety.
Dissecting the driver's earnings
The driver had earned a total of $6,020.20, before a deduction of $792.38. The deduction included $788.38 worth of commissions to Grab, inclusive of the eight per cent Goods and Services Tax (GST), and a $4 "adjustments" fee.
Upon deduction, gross earnings for the week were apparently $5,227.82. This amount included a S$2 tip, as well as $2,080.70 worth of incentives. In assuming the driver drove all seven days that week, the driver earned an average of $449.50 per day.
No further details were provided about how the driver managed to rack up the earnings. Other overheads such as rental costs, petrol fees and parking costs were also undisclosed.
Netizens who are presumably private-hire drivers speculated that the driver likely put in anywhere between 12 to 20 hours each day to achieve the earnings.
Netizens in heated discussion over credibility and safety
A flood of comments - both positive and negative - filled the Facebook post, with over 250 comments to date. Many were curious over the total number of hours driven and rides taken up by the driver.
"I just want to know how many hours he is driving everyday and what are the expenses?" commented user Chris Poh.
Some commenters were quick to debunk the incident as a publicity stunt by Grab.
"Another stunt. When all others jump in, they'll get disappointed for changing their careers." commented user Allan Wang.
Others were jealous and discussed the negative effects of disclosing personal income as well as a disbelief of the amount earned.
"Spoilt market and killing all drivers. Wise drivers never disclose their income. This will affect the future supply and demand. Later our RSI indicator will become overbought." posted a user.
"I drove for eight hours straight for three days, I also can't get half of that amount plus incentives!" commented another user.
Some commenters showed concern over the driver's health and safety and were supportive.
