SINGAPORE: A former business director at ST Electronics was charged on Friday afternoon with two counts of corruption amounting to more than S$87,000.

47-year-old Mark Edward Tjong is accused of corruptly obtaining gratification from the managing director of Kings Shipping & Trading Company, Mujibur Rahman, in August 2006.

Court documents stated the money was a reward for appointing Mujibur as an agent of ST Electronics and to assist ST Electronics with a project.

The project also involved the Bangladesh Police Department.

The money was allegedly transferred from Mujibur to the bank account of a woman by the name of Ho Su Ling.

During the short hearing, Tjong's lawyer, Shashi Nathan said his client is claiming trial.

A pre-trial conference has been set for 25 July.

If convicted, Tjong, a permanent resident, can be jailed up to five years and fined S$100,000 on each charge.

Former business director of ST Electronics on trial for corruption

MarkEdwark2806e.jpg

SINGAPORE: A former business director of ST Electronics (STE) appeared in court on Monday for the start of his corruption trial.

Mark Edward Tjong, 48, is accused of two counts of corruptly obtaining gratification totalling some S$87,000 from Bangladeshi agent Mujibur Rahman in 2006.

Tjong, a Singapore permanent resident, is accused of getting the money in return for appointing Mr Mujibur to assist STE with a bid for a project involving the Bangladesh Police Department.

STE is a government defence contractor that provides system integration services for infrastructure projects.

According to court documents, Mr Mujibur was appointed STE's agent for its project contract bid and his role was to advise STE on the tender process to help it win the contract.

If STE successfully clinched the contract, Mr Mujibur would be paid an agent fee amounting to seven per cent of the project's contract price.

Mr Mujibur went on to assist STE in the bid by facilitating meetings with the relevant parties in Bangladesh and guiding STE in preparing tender documents.

STE was later awarded the contract and Mr Mujibur was paid the agent fee in July 2006.

In August 2006, Mr Mujibur signed two blank Citibank cheques and handed them to Tjong.

Two sums of money - totalling some S$87,000 - were then deposited into the account of Ms Ho Su-Ling, who is Tjong's wife.

Tjong subsequently withdrew the money from Ms Ho's bank account.

Tjong's lawyer, Mr Shashi Nathan, told reporters his client's position is that he never accepted any gratification and that he was only helping Mr Mujibur with banking transactions here.

The first tranche of the trial will go on till January 10, and a second tranche is slated for next month.
