Fined for illegal entry

By Elena Chong

A WOMAN who used her employee's permit to try and enter the Resorts World Sentosa casino was fined $4,000 on Tuesday. Luo Meifang, 42, a Singaporean foodstall operator, was fined another $400 for attempting to get into the casino without paying the entry levy of $100 on July 14. The court heard that Luo, who runs two food stalls at Alexandra Hospital and Singapore General Hospital, had gambled at the casino on four occasions since April. When she realised that people presenting work permits at the entrance did not have to pay the levy, she decided to do the same. About a week before July 14, she asked her worker, Ms Long Xiuhua, 39, a Chinese national, for her work permit.

The kitchen assistant handed the permit to her without asking why. On July 14, when Luo tried to enter the casino using Ms Long's work permit, she was stopped by a security officer.
Asked for her name, Luo claimed she was 'Ah Hua', but when asked for her birth date, she was unable to answer. The officer then referred her to the auxiliary police. She then admitted that she was a Singaporean and showed her identity card. Luo could have been jailed for up to 2 1/2 years and/or fined up to $500 for attempting to enter the casino without paying the entry levy. A similar case against relief cabby Ong Phee Tian, 42, has been adjourned to Oct 27.
