<!-- end left side bar --> <!-- story content : start --> A FORMER SBS Transit bus driver who caused the death of a motorcyclist through his negligence earlier this year was fined $6,000 and banned from driving for four years on Wednesday.

Ang Siang Hwee, 55, was also fined another $2,500 for causing hurt to a colleague, Mr Chong Yek Yong, 50, who was a passenger in the bus on March 7. Another charge of causing hurt to a 43-year-old woman colleague was considered during his sentencing.

Ang, who pleaded guilty, was making a right turn from Bukit Batok Street 23 into a bus depot at 4.14am that day when he failed to give way to an oncoming motorcyclist who had the right of way. The bike, ridden by restaurant manager David Selvarajoo, 27, smashed through the rear door of the bus. He was found trapped under his machine inside the bus.

Mr Selvarajoo was taken to National University Hospital unconscious and died 61/2 hours later of head injury. Ang could have been jailed for up to two years and/or fined for causing death by doing a negligent act. For causing hurt by doing a negligent act, the maximum penalty is six months' jail and a $2,500 fine.
