ROSELYN Pascua, who came here from the Philippines about three weeks ago to visit relatives and friends, was found stabbed to death early on Monday in a room in Peony Mansion on Bencoolen Street. A resident in a nearby room heard suspicious sounds coming from the room and alerted the caretaker at about 3am. Ms Pascua's door was not locked and he saw her bloodied body lying face-up on the floor.

Police were called at 3.20pm and found that Ms Pascua had been stabbed several times in the chest. They have classified the case as murder. Police also issued an alert to taxi drivers to look out for three Filipino women and two Thai men to assist in the investigations. Police declined to say if the murder weapon was recovered.

Some of the three-bedroom apartments in Peony Mansions have been partitioned into eight rooms each, which are then rented out to budget travellers and Singaporeans from $25 a day. Mr Ching Fok Wah, 58, who was manning the fish soup stall at the coffee shop on the ground floor of the building, said that Ms Pascua was pretty and friendly. 'It's so tragic she died,' he said.

SINGAPORE : Police have arrested a 34-year-old Indian national in connection with the murder of a Filipino woman on Monday. He will be charged in court with murder on Friday.

Days after 30-year-old Roselyn Reyes Pascua was found murdered, residents of Peony Mansion are still reeling from the incident.

The Filipina is believed to be a friend of the suspect, who was caught near Kitchener Road at about 4pm on Wednesday.

She was found lying face-up in a fifth floor unit, which is typically partitioned into eight small rooms. Some residents were unnerved by the gruesome incident and are said to have packed up and left.

Mindy, a stallholder at Peony Mansion, said: "A lot of people moved out. But I do not know if it is (because) they do not feel comfortable. Of course, it has affected our business because they do not live here, so they do not come down to eat."

Several tenants said some of the partitioned rooms can be rented for about S$25 a night. Responding to queries from MediaCorp, the Urban Redevelopment Authority said Peony Mansion can be converted into a hotel or boarding house if it has been given planning approval.

But it said it has not received any applications for the units to be converted to boarding house use recently. It will investigate and take appropriate enforcement action, if necessary. - CNA/sc/ms

SINGAPORE : The Filipino woman who was found dead at a lodging house in Bencoolen Street earlier this month used to work in Singapore as an "entertainer" using a 3-month tourist visa.

This was revealed by her cousin, who spoke to reporters outside the mortuary on Thursday.

Ms Erliza Pascua said her cousin, Roselyn Pascua, came to Singapore once a year, earning S$3,000 from each visit.

Ms Erliza Pascua said it was her own father who told her of Miss Pascua's death.

"She worked here as an entertainer. Last year, she called me. But this time, (she didn't) contact me. That's why I was very shocked to find out that she has passed away already," said Erliza Pascua, cousin of the deceased.

The victim had a 10-year-old daughter in the Philippines, and it's said that she had a boyfriend here.

She was found stabbed at Peony Mansion on March 15.

On March 19, an Indian national - 34-year-old Gopinathan Nair Remadevi Bijukumar - was charged in court with her murder.

Ms Pascua said it was the last time her cousin planned to work in Singapore because she had made enough money to build a house in the Philippines. - CNA /ls
