DESPITE millions spent on lawsuits and education efforts to curb online piracy globally, a growing number of Net users no longer believe in copyright laws and continue to help themselves to copyrighted works with the aid of technological tools like BitTorrent. Globally, copyright laws are 'losing ... moral imperative among the general public. They do not accept its principles and values', said Justice Michael Fysh, the opening speaker of the two-day World Intellectual Property Organisation (Wipo) Asia Pacific Regional Forum on Copyright and Related Rights. Wipo is the United Nations agency overseeing intellectual property issues. The chairman of the United Kingdom's Copyright Tribunal painted a gloomy picture of widespread abuse of copyrighted works aided by technologies like file-sharing program BitTorrent. He estimates that more than 50 per cent of consumers today download infringing content from the Internet, and he urged the 100-plus strong audience of lawyers, legislators and creative industry professionals at the Swissotel Merchant Court hotel to work together to find a solution to the problem before it worsened. And make no mistake, things are getting worse, he said. Beyond consumers who ignore the law, an increasing number of users are now looking for legal loopholes to legitimise their activities, said Justice Fysh.
