A police press release was issued on Jan 29 about the crime:

SINGAPORE - Police have arrested a man, 53, and two women, 23 and 24, for a series of theft from supermarkets in the Jurong East area.

On Jan 8, 2014, Police received a report of a case of shop theft in a supermarket at Jurong East, where a can of abalone valued at $83.80 was stolen. Officers from the Crime Strike Force of Jurong East Neighborhood Police Centre immediately viewed the CCTV footage and managed to obtain the images of the suspects.

The officers then conducted in-depth probes and managed to establish their identities.

On Jan 29, 2014 at about 9pm, the three suspects were arrested at the vicinity of Teban Gardens.

The stolen can of abalone was also recovered. Upon arrest, several items which were believed to be stolen properties amounting to over $1,500 were also recovered from the suspects' house. The items recovered included two cans of abalones, an assortment of bird's nest, chicken essence, and dried mushrooms.

If found guilty, they can face an imprisonment term of up to seven years, and shall also be liable to a fine.

Commander of Clementi Police Division (Covering), Superintendent Gwee Aik Chiong commended the officers for their swift action in tracking down the thieves. He emphasised that members of the public should be aware that shop theft is a serious offence and he reminded retailers/shopkeepers to take the following measures to prevent shop theft:

• Display expensive items in locked display shelves which are only accessible by the staff;

• Avoid displaying expensive items near the store's entry and exit points. They should be placed at strategic locations where they can be monitored by staff or placed under CCTV surveillance. Use empty boxes and cans for expensive items placed near the entry and exit points;

• Enhance the store's security system by installing CCTVs and convex mirrors. Ensure that the cameras are in good working condition;

• Use an electronic tagging system;

• Display advisory signage or warnings against shop theft; and

• Advise all staff to be observant and vigilant.
