Cyclist's death: Retiree fined

<!-- by line --> By Khushwant Singh

MISTAKING the traffic lights to be in his favour, a retiree drove across a pedestrian crossing two years ago and hit a cyclist, killing him. In a district court on Monday, Wong Kuan was fined $8,000 and banned from driving all vehicles for five years. The 67-year-old had pleaded guilty to committing a negligent act that caused the death of Teyu Chok Yan, 59, on July 19, 2008. According to court papers, the accident happened while Wong was driving along the right lane of two-lane Tiong Bahru Road towards Lower Delta Road. His wife was also in the Toyota Corolla Atlis travelling at about 40kmh. The speed limit for the road was 50kmh. At the pedestrian crossing in front of Central Plaza, Wong mistook the red traffic light to be green and his car hit Mr Teyu, also a retiree, who was cycling across from left to right.
