AUTHORITIES are cracking down on cyclists who use motorised bicycles. Between Oct 12 and 23, officers from the Traffic Police and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) conducted a joint operation and issued a total of 310 summonses to errant cyclists, particularly those found using unapproved motorised bicycles or not wearing suitable protective bicycle helmets. The two-week operation took place at various locations including Geylang, Balestier, Boon Keng, Kallang, Serangoon, Eunos, Jurong and Changi. In a joint media statement, the Traffic Police and LTA reminded the public that it is an offence to ride a motorised bicycle that is not approved by the LTA. Both the rider and pillion rider should be aged 16 and above, wear suitable protective bicycle helmets, and 'always abide by the road traffic rules'. The authorities also sounded a warning to shop owners against selling unapproved motorised bicycles to the public for usage on the roads. Likewise, the public should not purchase unapproved motorised bicycles from such shops.
