CJ ups child basher's jail term <!--10 min-->
Man gets 12 years for 'savage' attacks on girlfriend's 3-year-old son <!-- headline one : start --> <!-- headline one : end --> <!-- Author --> <!-- show image if available --> <table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="100%"> <tbody><tr></tr> <tr> </tr> <tr> </tr> <tr> </tr> <tr><td colspan="2" class="padlrt8 georgia11 darkgrey bold">By Selina Lum </td></tr> </tbody></table>
A MAN who viciously bashed and bit his girlfriend's three-year-old son, leading to the child's death, will spend five more years in prison after an appeal by the prosecution. Chief Justice Chan Sek Keong, who heard the appeal yesterday, agreed with the prosecutors that Firdaus Abdullah, who he said 'acted like an animal', should be put away for a longer time for his 'savage' acts. The 27-year-old had repeatedly punched the toddler, slammed the child's head against a door frame and even sank his teeth into the boy's genitals. In May, a district court sentenced Firdaus to seven years' jail and ordered him to be caned 12 times. But on Tuesday, the Chief Justice upped his jail term to 12 years. The biting of the boy's penis and scrotum was 'a rather perverse form of cruelty to a three-year-old', said CJ Chan. 'I think it's really one of the worst offences under the Children and Young Persons Act,' he said. The punching of the boy and slamming of his head against the door frame also belonged to 'the worst category of offences' for causing grievous hurt, he added.
