WASHINGTON –
Despite a number of differences, Beijing and Moscow are united in their attitude toward Syria and North Korea in what
the Chinese Communist Party newspaper Global Times says is a partnership to establish “an obstacle to the Western monopoly and protect
the basic rights of the non-Western world, including the independence of national interests and the diversity of political systems,”
says a
report from Joseph Farah’s G2 Bulletin.

While both countries have suspicions toward each other, GT said that Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang’s visit to Moscow “in a year of global
elections (such as are occurring in Beijing, Moscow and Washington) showed that their relations sought a partnership ‘clearer and more
attractive.’”

Li made the comment on the occasion of his trip to Moscow to meet with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Sources say that Lavrov
had glowing words for Li, who agreed with Lavrov’s comment that the situations in Syria and North Korea were impossible to settle if the
international community ignored the positions of Russia and China.

The meeting of the two is significant, since Li is seen as a possible successor to Premier Wen Jiabao this October while Vladimir Putin now has
regained the Russian presidency.

According to a recent Moscow Times editorial, the U.S. is pursuing an advanced global missile defense system that is “tightly intertwined with
the idea of U.S. global dominance. This goes to the very heart of U.S. foreign and defense policy,” the Moscow Times said.

“For that reason, all negotiations with the U.S. in limiting missile defense end up going nowhere … Given that Russia is the weaker party in
bilateral relations, there is no compelling reason for Washington to tie its hands on an issue it considers central to its military and national
security strategy just for the sake of good relations with Russia.”
