A couple who left their son trapped inside a taxi for an hour and then chided the passer-by who rescued him has caused outrage on mainland social media.
The parents, who own the vehicle and had left the key inside the taxi along with their child, refused appeals to break a window and set him free, according to the rescuer, surnamed Lin, from Sichuan province in southwestern China.
Lin, who was enjoying a meal with his friends on the street, heard passers-by talking about the trapped child, who seemed motionless despite efforts to attract his attention.
He hurried over to see what was going on and learned that the parents were worried about the cost of repairing any damage to the taxi.
Concerned that the child’s life could be in danger because of a lack of oxygen, Lin asked if he could smash a window, but the parents did not answer.
According to Lin, no matter how many times he told them life was worth more than windows and he would compensate them for the damage, they would not give permission.

A video posted on social media by Lin shows people around the green taxi, knocking on the windows to attract the child’s attention. Lin, in white, can be seen smashing a window with a hammer and lifting the boy to safety. Another passer-by also steps forward to help.
But Lin’s good deed was not appreciated by the child’s parents.
A minute later, Lin was shocked to be confronted by the mother: “She said her child was so sleepy but woke up terrified,” he told Star Video.

Later, the mother called Lin and warned him to delete the video of the incident from social media.
Lin told Star Video that he felt very discouraged by the parents’ criticism but believes that he did the right thing: “I was very worried,” he said.
Many people online supported Lin’s actions, with the story attracting more than 28,000 comments on the social media platform Douyin.

“A child’s life is worth less than a pane of glass? It’s sad for this kid to have such parents,” one comment read, while another asked: “How can the mother say the child is too sleepy?”
Examples of ridiculous parenting frequently trend in China.
One such a story emerged last month about a woman who forced her son to drink a concoction of olive oil, coconut oil and linseed oil to induce vomiting when she learned he ate a piece of cake at a classmate’s birthday party.
In April, a domineering father in eastern China was widely criticised on social media when he tried to force his 24-year-old daughter to break up with her first love and find a better man after completing graduate school.
