Rui Chenggang, the former news anchor for China's state broadcaster CCTV detained by anti-graft authorities, is rumored to have been more or less a gigolo for for the wealthy wives of senior government officials, reports Duowei News, a US-based Chinese political news outlet.
The 37-year-old Rui, who has more than 10 million followers on Sina Weibo, China's version of Twitter, was detained by the authorities last July amid claims that he could be charged with treason for leaking state secrets.
Last week, foreign media outlets began reporting claims that Rui confessed during interrogation to having been to bed with at least 20 wives of Communist Party or government officials. Rui is even said to have told investigators that he possesses sex tapes of the women, some of whom were 20 to 30 years his senior.
The unconfirmed speculation is that the claims of Rui's treasonous activities were all made up by the cuckolded husbands of the women in an attempt to silence him for good.
Late last year, various media outlets reported that Rui had tearfully told authorities that Gu Liping, the wife of former presidential aide Ling Jihua, had forced herself onto him despite him having considered her like an big sister given their 20-year age gap. Ling, best known as the political "fixer" of former president Hu Jintao, was detained by anti-corruption authorities in December.
