A RELIEF cabby was charged in court on Friday with threatening his Member of Parliament Lee Yi Shyan earlier this year. Teo Kian Seng, 52, allegedly reminded Mr Lee, Minister of State of Trade and Industry and Manpower, of Yio Chu Kang MP Seng Han Thong's torching incident and hoped that 'history will not repeat itself'.

The alleged threat in Mandarin was made when he went to see his MP at a meet-the-people session at Block 409 Bedok North Avenue 2 on March 1. In an interview, he said he had gone to see the MP over a summons his mother received from Town Council for causing obstruction along the corridor. Teo's case has been adjourned to June 17 for a Deputy Public Prosecutor to handle the matter. If convicted, he faces a jail term of up to two years and/or a fine.

Court rejects man's guilty plea

A RELIEF cabby's guilty plea to a charge of threatening his Member of Parliament at a meet-the-people session was rejected by a court on Thursday. Teo Kian Seng, 52, had initially admitted to threatening Mr Lee Yi Shyan, MP for East Coast GRC, with intent to cause alarm to him by referring to MP Seng Han Thong's incident and saying that he hoped history would not repeat itself.

This took place at Block 409 Bedok North Avenue 2 on March 1. Mr Seng, the MP for Yio Chu Kang, was set on fire by a former cabby at a community event in Ang Mo Kio in January last year. In his mitigation, Teo had qualified his plea when he said he did not intend to cause harm or hurt to Mr Lee, the Minister of State for Trade and Industry and Manpower, that evening.

He also said he did not know why he uttered those words at the time. When asked by District Judge Low Wee Ping if he said those words to cause alarm to the victim, Teo said no. The judge rejected his plea and fixed the case for a pre-trial conference on June 28. If found guilty of criminal intimidation, Teo can be jailed for up to two years and fined.

<!-- end left side bar --> <!-- story content : start --> A RELIEF cabby who threatened his Member of Parliament - by saying that he hoped 'history will not repeat itself', referring to an incident where another MP was burnt by a man last year - has been fined $2,000. Teo Kian Seng, 52, pleaded guilty on Monday to threatening Minister of State for Manpower and Trade & Industry Lee Yi Shyan, 48, at a Meet-the-People Session in Bedok North on March 1 this year.

At the meeting, Teo had referred to the attack on Mr Seng Han Thong, MP for Yio Chu Kang, by a former cabby who poured thinner on him and set him alight at a community event in Ang Mo Kio in January last year. The incident received extensive media coverage and the MP's injuries were severe enough to require skin grafting, said Deputy Public Prosecutor Wong Woon Kwong.

The court heard that Teo was at home on Feb 8 when he overheard two representatives from East Coast Town Council talking to his mother, Madam Lim Sia Leng, 79, about the clutter outside the flat being a fire hazard. DPP Wong said Teo was unhappy as he felt that the officers had been rude to his mother, a rag-and-bone woman.

SINGAPORE : Former cabby Koo Tong Huat, who punched MP Seng Han Thong at a meet-the-people session a few years ago, has been sentenced to two weeks' jail for possessing a knife outside the Subordinate Courts.

Koo brought the knife, which had a 12cm blade, to the Subordinate Courts on May 15.

He claimed trial to the offence on Monday morning.

The court heard a woman saw Koo carrying the knife in his right hand outside the Subordinate Courts and informed a police officer.

Two police officers came out to take the knife away from Koo and subdued him after a struggle.

Koo, 78, told the court that he had wanted to commit suicide in the Subordinate Courts.

NAME: KOO TONG HUAT FIN NO: S0412218F CONVICTED ON : 02 AUGUST 2010

SINGAPORE - He might have escaped a jail term when he punched Member of Parliament Seng Han Thong in 2006.

But less than four years later, former taxi driver Koo Tong Huat (picture), 78, will find himself behind bars after running afoul of the law again.
Yesterday, Koo was sentenced to two weeks' jail for possessing a knife in public -after he asked to be incarcerated but claimed that he would create trouble again upon his release.

On May 15, a woman alerted the police after she spotted Koo carrying a knife - with a 12-cm blade - outside the Subordinate Courts.
Koo was subsequently subdued by two policemen after a struggle. Yesterday, Koo, who claimed trial to the offence, told District Judge Liew Thiam Leng that he had wanted to kill himself that day.

Koo, who was acquitted in his previous appearance in the docks after Mr Seng accepted his public apology, asked to be jailed for his latest transgression.
He explained that he did not want his family to help him pay a fine.

In his verdict, the district judge said he had considered Koo's age in sentencing but he noted that Koo neither disputed he had the knife nor raised any doubts in the prosecution's case.
