BUS operators SBS Transit and SMRT have been fined again by the Public Transport Council for failing to meet service standards in its regular six-monthly review. SBS Transit was fined $500 - less than its fine of $4,500 in the last review - for having overcrowded buses on five occasions. SMRT was also fined $200 - up from its $100 in the last review - for not meeting the scheduled headway standards on one occasion and having over crowded buses on another. The standard to be met for headways is that bus services must have at least 85 per cent of its trips depart the interchange no more than five minutes from its schedule headway. As for bus loading, each service must not exceed 95 per cent during weekday peak hours.

The quality of service of bus operators has generally improved in the earlier part of this year. -- ST PHOTO: BRYAN VAN DER BEEK
</td></tr> </tbody></table>
THE quality of service of bus operators has generally improved in the earlier part of this year, according to a regular review. The Public Transport Council's (PTC's) review of SBS Transit's and SMRT Buses' operating performance showed that bus operators had largely met the Quality of Service (QoS) standards set between December and May. There were fewer instances of non-compliance compared to the previous six months. The few failures involved scheduled headways and passenger loading requirement. For these, SBS Transit and SMRT Buses were fined $500 and $200 respectively by the PTC. In the previous period, SBS Transit and SMRT Buses were fined $4,500 and $100 respectively. Both operators have since complied with the standards and continued to keep their bus breakdown and accident rates low. The PTC tracks and reviews the public transport operators' QoS performance and will announce the next six-monthly results in April.
