<!-- by line --> <!-- end by line --> A 23-YEAR-OLD man who threatened to release nude photographs of a woman onto the Internet unless she paid him $5,000, has been arrested for extortion said police on Thursday. The young woman contacted police on Tuesday, telling them she had received a number of text messages from an unknown mobile phone number demanding $5,000, or photographs of her naked would be posted online.

She had also discovered that her image had been used to advertise sex on a website. After investigations, officers from the Central Police Division discovered that the mobile phone number belonged to a bystander, but managed to establish the identity of a possible suspect. On Wednesday afternoon, a 23-year-old man was arrested at Bras Basah Road in conection with the case.

He was caught with a mobile phone still carrying the threatening messages; a notebook computer and a thumb drive were also seized. Further investigations discovered that the man had also threatened another woman in a similar way. Police said that the man will be charged on Friday with 'Putting A Person In Fear In Order To Commit Extortion'. If found guilty, the suspect could be jailed for up to five years and caned. He has been remanded into custody pending further investigations.

SINGAPORE : Police have arrested a 23-year-old man who allegedly extorted money from a woman by threatening to post pictures of her in the nude on the Internet. Both of them are China nationals.

Officers received a call from the 24-year-old woman on Tuesday evening, saying she had received numerous text messages demanding S$5,000 from her. They were linked to an unknown phone number.

It is believed that the sender of the messages also threatened to display her pictures online if his demands were not met.

Not long after that, the woman found out that one of her photographs had been uploaded onto a website advertising sexual services.

The authorities soon found out that the subscriber to the incriminating phone number was not the one who had sent the text messages.

Through further investigations, officers managed to identify the suspect and arrested him in Bras Basah Road on Wednesday afternoon.

He had with him a mobile phone which contained text messages that were allegedly sent to the woman. Officers also seized a computer notebook and a thumb drive from him.

The suspect will be charged in court on Friday. If convicted, he could be sentenced to between two and five years' jail and caned.

Deleting the message from your phone doesn't destroy the evidence. It's all stored on a central server.
