72 held in Geylang blitz

MORE than 70 people were arrested in a joint raid on Geylang on Saturday.
The multi-agency operation, which began at 6pm, involved over 150 officers from the Bedok Police Division, the Criminal Investigation Department, the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority and Singapore Customs.

They rounded up 72 people for a variety of criminal offences, ranging from immigration violations, to peddling of contraband cigarettes, illegal gambling, as well as gang and vice-related activities. Also seized were 124 cartons and 90 packets of duty unpaid cigarettes. In one raid at Lorong 25A Geylang, a Vietnamese man who was believed to be acting as a lookout managed to flee as the police were closing in on him.

The bald Vietnamese man, who is believed to be in his 30s, was last seen wearing a white polo t-shirt, black bermudas and black sandals. Police are still searching for the man, who had run away with a handcuff on his right wrist. Anyone who has seen the man or has information can call the Police Hotline at 1800-2550000.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police Teo Chun Ching, Commander of Bedok Police Division, said: 'This is part of our ongoing efforts to ensure that our streets are free from crime and disorder and we will continue to conduct such operations. All persons arrested will be appropriately dealt with in accordance with the law'.
