$7,000 fine for causing mother's death in road accident

She failed to keep a proper lookout when driving her car in 2010 and her mother died in the accident. On Wednesday Ng Woon Kum, 38, was fined $7,000 and disqualified from driving for three years for her fatal mistake. She had pleaded guilty to committing a negligent act that caused the death of Madam Yip Lock Mooi, 79, on Aug 1 2010.
The court heard that the program manager with Hewlett-Packard Asia Pacific was driving her son, sister and mother to buy egg tarts from a pastry shop in South Bridge Road at about noon on Aug 1 2010. At the traffic junction of Eu Tong Sen Street and Upper Pickering Street, she saw that the traffic light was green.
There was no green turning arrow but she proceeded to make a right turn as she thought the path was clear. Businessman Soh Kiang Yong, 43, was driving along New Bridge Road in the direction of Cantonment Road and by the time he saw her car, it was too late.
His vehicle smashed into hers and Madam Yip, who was seated on the left rear seat suffered multiple injuries. The housewife died in the Singapore General Hospital about seven hours later.
