SINGAPORE: Pang Kim Kwang's car was vandalised on two occasions in 2008, so to catch the culprit, he hired a private investigator to watch over his vehicle parked at a car park near his flat at Bedok North.

On August 8 2008 at about 3.45am, the latter noticed a vehicle drive by his client's car. Two men later got out and both were seen emptying what was believed to be a corrosive liquid out of disposable cups onto Mr Pang's car, leaving behind significant damage amounting to S$14,251.34.

Two other video cameras installed at Mr Pang's flat and inside the vehicle, also caught the culprits in the act.

One of the men - 35-year-old Goh Song Chek - appeared before a district court and pleaded guilty to mischief on Tuesday.

It is not known why Goh and his accomplice committed the act of mischief. It was also not clear if they were also responsible for the other two acts of vandalism committed against Mr Pang.

According to court documents, both Goh and his accomplice fled in a getaway car after the incident. The private investigator followed them, but stopped his surveillance after the accused returned to his flat in Bangkit Road.

The former then reported the incident to the authorities, who later traced and ascertained that the getaway car had been loaned to Goh at the time of the offence.

Goh, who had previous convictions for theft and cheating in 2001, and criminal breach of trust in 2007, was later arrested. He pleaded guilty to the offence and is currently out on a S$5,000 bail.

In court, the accused, who is married, told District Judge Soh Tze Bian that he intends to pay Mr Pang for the damage caused. He is to do so by March 15, said the judge, who later postponed the sentencing to March 22.

Until Goh makes full payment to the victim, Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Wong Woon Kwong requested that his bail amount be raised. However, the judge said this was unnecessary.

If found guilty, the accused could be jailed for two years and/or fined.

Goh's accomplice remains at large. It is understood that the accused is now helping the police to identify his partner in crime.
