3 teens held for mischief by fire

05:55 AM Jan 17, 2011

SINGAPORE - It was 8.10am on Friday and three teenagers were throwing things from a block of flats at Yishun Street 61, according to an eyewitness.

The three teens aged 14 and 15, are now under arrest and being investigated for committing a rash act and mischief by fire.

After receiving a description of the teenagers by a caller, officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division searched the area and spotted the trio. They tried to flee but were eventually detained.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the teens had thrown several pairs of slippers from the ninth floor of an HDB block and had also set fire to some newspapers before throwing them down, according to the police.

A case of rash act carries a jail term of up to six months and a fine of up to $2,500, upon conviction.

Those found guilty of mischief by fire can be jailed for up to seven years and fined.
