3 taxi robbers caught

By Amanda Lee

THREE robbery suspects were arrested on Sunday morning - thanks to two public-spirited members of public and the victim himself. The police were alerted to a taxi robbery at West Coast Park at 7.40am on Sunday. Investigations revealed that two men and a woman had boarded the taxi at Petir Road, directed the 52-year-old taxi driver to West Coast Park, carpark 2 and suddenly placed a knife on the driver's neck, demanding cash.

All three then ran away with the taxi driver's earnings amounting to about $250, his handphone valued at about $150 as well as the ignition key of the taxi. The taxi driver sought help from a 60-year-old man who was driving by. He promptly alerted the police and offered to drive the victim around to look for the suspects. When they spotted the suspects on Clementi Road, he gave chase.

Mr Michael Theofanis, 19, who was passing by and heard the victim's cries for help, joined in the chase.
The suspects were caught by police at Petir Road. Mr Michael Theofanis and the 60-year-old good Samaritan have been commended by the Commander of Clementi Police Division HQ, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police Melvin Yong, for their assistance and public spiritedness.
