A man died in his prison cell on Monday afternoon, just 21 days after his 21st birthday.
Dinesh Raman, who was in prison for breaching his probation for rioting and theft, was found unconscious in a cell in Changi Prison.
He was attended to by prison and medical staff before being taken to Changi General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12.45pm, said a Prisons spokesman.
On his death certificate, the cause of death is stated as cardio-respiratory failure, pending investigation.
His family claimed Dinesh didn't have a medical history of heart problems.
They claimed they were told by prison officers who visited their home that Dinesh had turned violent and attacked prison officers on the day he died. He was restrained following the attack.
Dinesh's family members are hoping a coroner's inquiry will shed more light on how he died. That's when the results of his post-mortem examination will be made known.
