A teen has received a reduced sentence for attacking and robbing a taxi driver after his parents appealed with a joint statement promising to rehabilitate him.
The teen, 19-year-old Joshua Lye Chun Shern had committed the act together with a friend, 19-year-old Tan Wei Ke in April last year.
The duo came up with the plan while at a house party in Siglap. They had been drinking earlier at a Thai discotheque in Taman Jurong. They carried out their plan in the cab they spotted at about 5am at Siglap Road.
Tan distracted the driver while Lye opened the car door and attacked the driver. Tan then snatched the driver's mobile phone and the pair fled to some flats nearby. The taxi driver was left dazed and bleeding after the attack.
Tan has since been sentenced to two years' probation as he was found to suffer from a psychiatric condition. Lye was originally sentenced to reformative training, but will now undergo probation instead.
He will be wearing an electronic tag on his ankle for three months and perform 200 hours of community service. Both teens have also returned about $2,300 to the taxi driver.
