THE China-born wife of opposition politician Tan Lead Shake was on Tuesday jailed 16 years for killing her brother-in-law and trying to kill her sister-in-law. In the early hours of June 28 last year, Wu Yun Yun, 27, stabbed her husband's younger brother, Mr Tan Lead Sane, 33, a computer engineer, and his wife, Madam Huang Meizhe, 36, also a Chinese national. He died shortly after. Prosecutors had pressed for Wu to be jailed for life for the killing, but the High Court decided that her case did not warrant an indeterminate sentence. Justice Kan Ting Chiu relied on the evidence of government psychiatrist George Fernandez, who said that Wu may have a relapse of the depression which led her to commit the offence, but she was unlikely to re-offend. In April, the court had heard that Wu felt miserable after her arranged marriage to Tan Lead Shake. She had problems adjusting to her new life and felt that her mother-in-law favoured Madam Huang. Wu's husband was not in court. After sentencing, her mother-in-law, Madam Ng Bee Hion, and Madam Huang burst into dramatic sobs, lamenting that the sentence was too light.

THE China-born wife of former opposition figure Tan Lead Shake was jailed 16 years for killing her brother-in-law and attempting to kill his wife on Tuesday. Wu Yunyun, 27, looked dazed as the sentence was handed down.
Her mother-in-law broke out into loud sobs in the court's public gallery. Later, outside the courtroom, Madam Ng Bee Hion wailed that the sentence was too light for a crime that cost her a son. Mr Tan, 40, who had visited his wife only once in her 11/2 years in remand, was not in court. He was at his Paya Lebar home on Tuesday evening, looking after their two children. He politely declined to be interviewed, saying it was too painful to talk about the incident. His wife was sentenced to 12 years' jail for killing Mr Tan's brother Lead Sane, 33, and four years for the attempted manslaughter of Mr Tan Lead Sane's wife, Madam Huang Meizhe, 36, who is also from China.
