‘Surrender self-made shotguns’
MUAR: Police here want those in possession of home-made shotguns to surrender them immediately. OCPD Asst Comm Mohammed Nasir Ramli said these weapons can be faulty and dangerous to use.
It is also against the law for people to own shotguns, although home-made, without permits. He said police are making the request after a villager in Kampung Muda Jaya near Pagoh was injured when his home-made shotgun went off accidently on Tuesday.
The man, aged 62, had wanted to shoot some squirrels in an orchard behind his house. The man was injured on the right shoulder and rushed to the Sultanah Fatimah Specialist Hospital for treatment, he said yesterday.
ACP Mohammed Nasir said police had seized the shotgun and would investigate how the villager, Mohd Fuad Ibrahim, came to own it. He said checks showed the gun was a crude production.
He said Mohd Fuad, who suffered a broken bone on the right hand and injuries to his lungs, underwent an operations to remove the pellets from his chest.
He said the man also faced a charge under Section 8 of the Firearms Act for possessing a shotgun without a permit and could be jailed up to seven years or fined RM10,000 or both if found guilty.
