THE start of the weekend was ruined for Singaporeans living in low-lying parts of the country, when they woke up surrounded by rainwater.
They found themselves ankle-deep, knee-deep and even waist-deep in it, the result of rain that began pouring down at dawn, and persisted for hours until it flooded homes, shops and basement carparks.
Saturday's storm battered the central and eastern parts of Singapore with nearly double the force of last month's two flash floods.
The heaviest rainful was between 4.40am and 6.40am. Between 178.4 and 179.6 mm of rainfall were dumped in two hours over the central and eastern areas, easing only at about 7am.
Singapore Civil Defence Force officers were busy freeing up motorists and passengers - 59 of them - stuck in cars and buses.
The usual 'hotspots' - Bukit Timah, Upper Thomson and Telok Kurau - were again awash in water, although there have been recent efforts to improve drainage there.
