The Somalian Pirates had been a global pain in the ass for years and so far nothing effective had been done about them except the Indian Navy had sunk one of their (captured fishing) boats.

Only occasionally just 1 or 2 of these pirates had been shot dead by navies in action, generally they had been very lucrative and safe as well as SUCCESSFUL - bastards!

I have totally no objection to this, it is proven that not only Joseph Stalin can do it with cold brute, Putin can do it too. And that served the pirates right!

Call it the case of the missing African pirates.
Last week after a Russian oil tanker was seized by 11 pirates thought to be Somali though no one appears to know their nationality for sure, Russian commandos stormed the ship, killing one of the bad guys and regaining control.
Russian officials claimed they considered bringing the pirates to Moscow for trial but decided not to because of the uncertainties of international law.
So the Russians say they placed the pirates in a boat without weapons and after taking away the pirates navigation equipment cut the small boat loose. While removing the weapons makes sense to many people, leaving the pirates at sea without navigation equipment strikes some as senseless. Even Captain William Bligh of the Bounty got to keep a sextant.
Now the Russians say they're pretty sure all the pirates died, having disappeared off radar screens about an hour after they were cut loose.
It's fair to wonder, however, about what exactly happened since the Russian President Dmitri Medvedev recently indicated that maximum punishment would be meted out by the Russian navy in dealing with pirates.
Medvedev said:
Not encouraging words if you're a pirate.
Meanwhile, Somali pirates promise revenge for the Russian action.

Marines seized them during a dramatic operation to free a hijacked Russian oil tanker far from shore, killing an 11th suspect in the gun battle.

The tanker, the Moscow University, was seized on 5 May some 350km (190 nautical miles) off the Yemeni island of Socotra as it sailed for China, carrying crude oil worth $50m (£33m).

Cdr John Harbour, spokesman for the EU naval force in Somalia, Navfor, said the Russian navy had been within its rights to release the suspects.
It was, he told the BBC News website, impossible to judge their situation without knowing the details of the boat - described as an inflatable by Russian sources - and the radio beacon they had been given.
It was quite likely the Russian ship lost radar contact with the boat after an hour, Cdr Harbour said, while the signal from the beacon would depend on the strength of its battery and whether or not it could be detected by satellite.
The Navfor spokesman suggested the loss of navigational equipment would not necessarily be critical if there was an experienced mariner among the 10 men on the boat.
Stressing that nothing could be said for sure without knowledge of the boat, the weather and other factors, he noted that pirates had been known to operate up to 1,200 nautical miles (2,200km) from the Somali coast.

Pirates die when Russian navy turns them back to shore


A group of Somali pirates have died after being captured and then set free, to find their way back to shore in a small boat without navigation aids.

The pirates, who were captured by the Russian Navy last week, were released after being involved in the seizure of a Russian oil tanker.

Marines from the Russian destroyer Marshal Shaposhnikov had managed to free the tanker and its crew in a dawn operation last week.

The pirates were set free after Russian officials found there was no legal basis on which they could be held.

The same officials said that the pirates had been put to sea in a boat 550km offshore, with all weapons and navigational equipment removed.

A top naval official has insisted the Russian navy personnel onboard the Marshal Shaposhnikov had offered to accompany the pirates to within 20 kilometres of the shore, but the offer of escort was turned down.

Rights groups have said the Russian navy had acted improperly in the affair, but the Somalian government has defended the action, saying the Russian crew acted effectively and decisively to ensure not one crew member of the captured tanker was hurt.
