Latest - 2 Activists Arrested Outside MOM building

Two activists were arrested at around 1 pm outside MOM Building.

They were speaking out against MOM high handed ways of rejecting two Burmese's work permit.

Seelan and Kai Xiong, while holding placard, were highlighting the plight of our Burmese pals whose work permit were rejected after working here for 11 years for their pro-democracy support in their own country.

Now tell me, last Sunday, 200 PRC gathered peacefully outside MOM building to protest against their bosses for not paying them, no arrest and MOM even render help immediately. In stark contrast, 2 activists protesting against MOM high handed ways of rejecting the renewal of work permit were arrested!!

It makes me wonder;

1) 2 activists pose more danger than 200 protesters?

2) 2 activists pose more danger than a gathering of 200 foreign workers??

This is a sick country!

Press Release: More Burmese facing expulsion from Singapore

Seelan Palay
Yet another two Burmese nationals working in Singapore have fallen victim to the Government for their support of the pro-democracy movement in their home country.

In the latest development, Singapore’s Manpower Ministry is refusing to renew the work permits of Mr Moe Kyaw Thu, 35 and Mr Win Kyaw, 38, who had both worked here for 11 years each. Moe is a construction supervisor and Win, a technical supervisor.
This drastic turn of events resulted from the two men’s involvement in highlighting human rights abuses by the Burmese military junta following its crackdown of the pro-democracy movement in Rangoon led by monks in September last year.

Moe in particular appealed to MOM reiterating that he has no police record of any kind and he has fully respected the laws of Singapore while working here.

Both men have participated in the activities of the Overseas Burmese Patriots (OBP), an advocacy group formed in Singapore after the military crackdown. The group was involved in organizing and conducting a series of public campaigns in Singapore against the Burmese regime.

One of the activities was when over 40 Burmese, assembled in groups of four, held a peaceful protest along Orchard Road on 20 Nov 07 during the ASEAN Summit in nearby Shangri-la Hotel.

Following the event, the group was accused by the Singapore Government of deliberately breaking local laws. Its members were given a police warning for their participation in the protest. But none of the Burmese activists were ever charged with any unlawful act while pursuing their political objectives.
The hands of the PAP Government first became apparent in September this year when three members of the OBP were expelled when their work permits or residence in Singapore came up for renewal.

Deputy Prime Minister and Home Affairs Minister Wong Kan Seng defended the Government’s action then, stating that the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority “considers this small group to be undesirable persons and rightly decided they should leave.”

In the ongoing saga, despite their employers wanting to retain them, Moe and Win have been ordered to leave Singapore by the end of January 2009.
“If they send me back, my family will suffer greatly. I’d have to spend the rest of my life in prison.” said Moe.

The latest expulsions go against the sympathy and support that Burmese pro-democracy activists receive throughout the world. The inhumane act of the Singapore Government is an indirect endorsement of the murderous Burmese junta.

My sympathies go out to the two protestors but I think there needs to be more carefulness in the little contradictions when promoting a cause.

The Burmese are obviously denied work permits because they participated in protests against their government in Singapore - a good cause.

The problem arises when the example of the 200 PRCs is raised. Now, I would think the MOM should do something and there are another group of activists who are lobbying for the plight of these PRCs.

The question about why these PRCs were not arrested gives the impression that they warrant more reasons for arrests than the two and confuses on where the stand falls on - more protest rights for foreigners or less.

Singaporeans arrested in protest over Myanmar activist expulsions
Police Monday arrested two Singaporean activists for staging a protest in support of Myanmar nationals allegedly being forced to leave the city-state for involvement in political activities.

Seelan Palay and Chong Kai Xiong stood outside the Ministry of Manpower's building in the city's business district for about an hour before they were handcuffed by police without showing any resistance.

They wore red T-shirts and held a banner that read "Stop ill-treatment of Burmese activists."

The protest was in support of two Myanmar nationals, Moe Kyaw Thu and Win Kyaw, whose work permits have not been renewed by Singapore, effectively forcing them to leave, Palay said.

He said the two men were among 40 Myanmar nationals who took part in a protest against their country's ruling junta during a summit of Southeast Asian leaders hosted by Singapore in November 2007.

"We can't just stand by as Singaporeans, as personal friends, and watch them being expelled one by one," he said.

Moe Kyaw Thu told AFP that he was required to leave Singapore by January 27. Win Kyaw could not be contacted for comment Monday.

The Ministry of Home Affairs did not immediately reply to emailed queries from AFP on the case of the Myanmar nationals. A few others who took part in the same protest in 2007 have also had their work permit renewals turned down.

Home Affairs Minister Wong Kan Seng in September defended the government's decision not to renew the visas of some Myanmar nationals working or studying in the city-state, saying they were "undesirable" people.

Singapore has eased rules governing protests in a designated public park but it remains illegal elsewhere to hold a public gathering of five or more people without a police permit.

Singapore is home to an estimated 30,000 Myanmar nationals, many of them drawn by jobs as labourers that pay far above what they could earn in their poverty-stricken homeland.

there was a misrepresentation about the PRC workers. they were there to file complaint to MOM to claim for their unpaid wages from unscrupulous employers. the 2 arrested were sdp members. the duo's protest was ambiguous. was it really for the burmese or was it exploiting them to accredit SDP? if it was really for the cause of the wrongful explusion, they were admirable. conversely, if they were exploiting the situation for some media attention linked to SDP, then it would be quite hypocritical.

Dear Mr. leetahbar

What Mr. Seelan and Mr. Chong did was really for the cause of the wrongly expulsion (note: u mentioned it was wrongful explusion towards Mr. Moe Kyaw Thu Mr. Win Kyaw and i would presume u would agree with it as well).

Mr. Seelan and Mr. Chong are civil activists. It is usual and normal for civil activists to stage such protests against situations of injustice and oppression. Such injustice is against all respect for the equality, worth, and dignity of people. This is part and parcel of civil action and social action.

So, please do remember to show your admiration to these two Messers, like what you have mentioned, because the intention of their cause is to advocate for Mr. Moe and Mr. Win.

Sincerely
Chia Tse Li

the involvement of SDP has already casted doubt on their action. SDP is local political group which should be involved in local domestic affairs. the 2 jokers represented SDP that was for sure.

if anyone who should be protesting, it should be from their burmese compatriots here or even their embassy.

if other nationalities FTs working/studying here exploit singapore and organise 'peaceful' protests knowing that singapore is a gentle country and they wouldn't be bashed or gunned down, soon this cuntry would be turned into a peaceful PROTEST HUB!

the gov sgp only targeted the initiators of the protests for security sake as they could have breached their allegiance to the conditions of their stay here. lawfully the gov may have acted correctly but humanely our gov has over reacted.

from the general view, it seems that SDP does always take the slightest opportunity to sell to foreign international media. hence, the hidden agenda is also quite obvious.:(

Since it is admirable, does it matter whether they are SDP or not?

Why are you always taking a swipe at the SDP? Are you sure the two activists are members of the SDP?

SDP exploiting FREE BURMESE for own hidden agenda to get foreign media's attention. it's like showcasing their over-rated reputation which in peasants' impression is just notorious mischief.

if all the ASEAN leaders couldn't piece humpty dumpty burma together, don't ever think that SDP has the magic glue to do it. they were there for another issue under the guise of FREE BURMA.

what actually could they do in the first place? light more candles? free more balloons?

2 held over protest
By Sue-Ann Chia

TWO Singaporeans were arrested yesterday after they staged a protest at the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) in Havelock Road.
Mr Seelan Palay, 24, and Mr Chong Kai Xiong, 27, were protesting against the alleged non-renewal of the work permits of two Myanmar nationals who were involved in political activities here.

Wearing red T-shirts, they stood outside the MOM building at noon, with placards around their necks that read 'Stop ill-treatment of Burmese activists'. They were arrested about an hour later for 'criminal trespass' and released yesterday evening on bail.

The Government said both men 'repeatedly defied orders from MOM's security personnel to leave the premises'. Police were called in for help against their trespass, said a statement from MOM and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) yesterday.

In an online posting, Mr Palay identified the two Myanmar nationals whose cause he had taken up as Mr Moe Kyaw Thu and Mr Win Kyaw. Both men, he added, were part of a group of Myanmar nationals who took part in a protest march against their country's ruling junta during the Asean summit here in 2007.

It is not the first time Mr Palay, a visual artist, and Mr Chong, a software programmer, have had brushes with the law.

Last March, they were among a group of people arrested for taking part in an illegal assembly outside Parliament House. The trial is still ongoing.

Yesterday's protest, however, was their first for Myanmar nationals working in Singapore, some of whom had been in the news in recent months for failing to get their work passes renewed.

Most are part of the Overseas Burmese Patriots group that has organised protests here against its home government.

The MHA and MOM, in their statement, said foreigners are welcome to work and live here, as well as organise political activities as long as they abide by Singapore laws. But some Myanmar nationals here do not observe the 'basic obligation of respecting the laws of the land and the local sensitivities of its people'.

'They have shown in their actions and attitude a wilful disregard and contempt for the law and the Singapore authorities.'

Some acted in this manner even though they have benefited from education subsidies and Singaporeans' hospitality, and 'even demand the right to stay here as if it is a personal entitlement'.
These foreigners have also applied political pressure through the media and agitated foreign public opinion against the Singapore authorities to compel the country to give in to their demands. 'These persons are not welcomed in Singapore. They should leave Singapore once their existing passes expire.'
Noting that Singapore laws apply equally to everyone, they said: 'No one is allowed to break the law with impunity regardless of how morally superior he thinks his cause is.'
words in red show the impartiality of the law. those in bold was the comment from sgp gov. depending on how neutral or prejudiced one is, different opinions and belief are bound to surface.

for this instance, our gov could be correct to expell them who could have been "adulterated by sdp's diabolical agenda".

ask yourself:

WHY DOES THE TS, LAMEI DOING THIS?

she is once again grabbing at the opportunity to instill hatred and anger into peasants so that such negativity can be exploited and directed at our gov. at this current bad times, SDP still cannot pause their nonsense and are still persistent to waste national resources to tackle their nonsense.

people, please do not be distracted by such petty mischief that would not accomplish anything but only serve to break up our national unity to help each other see through the present national crisis.

SDP has once again shown their dishonesty and hidden agenda and would even stoop to exploiting other country's plight for the sake of attaining self-glorification that is irrelevant to us.

FREE BURMA is a very complex task that ASEAN leaders are continuously working tirelessly at. if it could be easily solved by protests, then many other problems would have already been resolved.

SDP is just opportunistic that takes advantage of the conditions and exploits it further to their own self-benefit.

DO NOT BE FOOLED BY IT!:oIo:
