Overheard from Aljunied Resident
Overheard from Aljunied Resident: A resident said that while he was upset with the PAP for its policies and warning Aljunied voters against voting WP at the last GE, at least the PAP would admit its mistakes and take corrective actions. He is now more aware of the consequences which saw the WP taking over the Aljunied Town Council in 2011.
In short, he said the estate is not as well run, with cleanliness clearly worse than before. Another resident walking by chipped in that he moved in after the 2011 GE and vouches that he can tell that Aljunied is not as clean as his previous neighborhood.
That aside, they were willing to give the WP town council a chance. However, they are concerned that the WP has side stepped key questions about transparency and accountability regarding the passing of profitable contracts to a company owned by town council employees, and at inflated prices.
When I reminded them that WP had given their own explanations, one resident corrected me that the WP standard of transparency and accountability would not stand up in court because they did not exercise these requirements up front and with full disclosure. The WP actions and explanations were offered only after being exposed. The resident joked that the co-driver did not even possess a driver's licence, and now the driver has to correct the co-driver.
After that, I listened quietly. The two residents started talking to each other as I took my leave.
The final thing that stuck in my mind was hearing one say, "even I as a WP supporter have lost confidence with their silence and non-responses. What more a card carrying WP member? They may not be directly involved but they should be ones asking their WP leaders for answers. How do WP members dare to wear their WP uniforms when they know their leaders do not give full accountability but behave like a victim to win our sympathy? When I see them, I have many questions. Cannot respect.... " as I walked away and their voices trailed off.
