Re thread: ' One-off public transport voucher 'worth too little''
Applying for it a hassle, so poor go elsewhere for aid, say MPs, help agencies
http://www.straitstimes.com/breakin...c-transport-voucher-worth-too-little-20131115
The lukewarm response to the one-off vouchers that are meant to help the poor cope with fare hikes could be due to the amount offered and hassle in applying for them, MPs and help agencies told The Straits Times.
In Parliament on Monday, it was revealed that just over half of the 200,000 public transport vouchers available for needy residents to offset the fare increase in 2011 were taken up.
And this was after the Government had made two public announcements for applications.
"Maybe we could increase the amount given and simplify the administration so more people will come forward," MP for Holland- Bukit Timah GRC Liang Eng Hwa said.
(1) Ride bicycle is faster, cheaper than taking the bus.
- 'Public transport in Singapore: Ride bicycle is faster (18Jan2012), (alt URL) '
- '(Singapore) Cycling home - faster than public transport (12Feb2006)'
- 'Is it faster to cycle or take public transport in London? (19Sept2013)'
- Public transport operators are share holder owned for profit listed companies they are stingy with the value of public transport vouchers sponsored and it is difficult to obtain them : 'One-off public transport voucher 'worth too little'' (ST,15Nov2013)

(2) Cycling is good for the health and Singaporeans need to exercise more as healthcare costs increase and Singaporeans become more and more old, clumsy and fat with every passing day.
- 'One Million Diabetics By 2050 as Singaporeans Get Older, Fatter'- "Every one in two people, by age 70, will be diabetic - up from one in three today"(Men's Health, Oct2012, URL)

- Cost of living increases with a compulsory increase in national healthcare premium costs: 'National Day Rally 2013: MediShield premiums, Medisave rates to go up on broader coverage, says PM Lee'

- As people grow more clumsy, sickly and fat (+/- slow/ stupid), govt healthcare payouts also have to increase: 'More received help through Medifund in 2012: MOH' (TDY 15Nov2013)

(3) Singapore is a major per capita carbon polluter, amongst others responsible for the problems linked to global warming: "Of the major, non oil economies, Singapore takes the biscuit for Mr Global Dirty, with 36.6 tonnes per person, followed by Luxembourg (21.7t), Australia (18.8t) and US (16.1t)" ['Carbon emissions per person, by country etc – here’s the latest data (and it doesn’t look good)' (Oxfam, 29June2012)]- cycling can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions from motor vehicle use.

Actually, more bus lanes (besides some cycling paths is good) pro cyclist can use bus lanes cos they are quite skillful and fast (bus driver !UST have good judgement too n helmet is MUST), not so pro ones go by park connectors along big longkang etc.

Whichever the choice, both are healthy and environmentally friendly.

More bus lanes also means improved bus public transport system and more faith in govt to run economy. Otherwise, with a high Gini coefficient and ballooning waistlines, I am not surprised at all that the productivity of the average SG worker is falling.

Singaporeans need to love and feel in touch with the environment, otherwise, Singaporeans are only tourist in their own country...

more precisely the Netherlands bike lanes, not the London bike lanes, that blue one will turn you into pancakes by huge construction trucks.

Re: Singapore must encourage cycling as transportion mode for 3 very good reasons

London and copenhagen bike lanes? That is shit.
If you want to the best, learn from the best. Thus the Netherlands one is best.

the bicycle path in red is seperate from the road for cars. The bicycle path intersect the car by traffic lights.

Re: Singapore must encourage cycling as transportion mode for 3 very good reasons

that was the old one build in the 80's in the 21's century, the Netherlands is putting up floating roundabout so the bicycle lanes does not intersect with the car lane.
it look like this.

Another good model to follow will be Taiwan.

Bike lanes every where in Taipei. At of peak hours, you can take your bike into their MRT.

At almost all MRT stations, you have automated bike kiosk with first half hour bike use free, and very cheap every half hour after that.
And you can take from any kiosk to return at any kiosk.

Lots of countries following suit.
Even in UAE Dubai where I am currently in now has so many automated bicycle kiosk.

wiki bicycle sharing system

The earliest well-known community bicycle programme was started in the summer of 1965[21] by Luud Schimmelpennink in association with the radical group Provo in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.[22] This so-called White Bicycle Plan provided free bicycles that were supposed to be used for one trip and then left for someone else.

Taiwan just copy the dutch.

The Dutch White Plan was far too idealistic and was more of a joke. That was not thought through and did not account for the cupidity of humans, even in Holland.
I was in Amsterdamn often enough, and never did see their white bikes. One might as well say Ford Model T is like a Ferrari and Ferrari is nothing but a copy of Ford Model T.

All over the world, many countries are implementing very cheap bikes for use by public and with nominal fees.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bicycle_sharing_system

See for yourself how it is like all over the world.

In almost all democratic counties, that is being implemented in cities after cities.
Even in Communist China, that is being implemented in a very big way.
In non democratic country like UAE and Qatar, that is being implemented.

I believe only in Singapore where the regime is utterly illegitimate, greedy and ruthless and out to bleed its own people and where the people are totally exploited by the PAP regime that we will not ever see that here.

Read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bicycle_sharing_system.
You know for sure you never ever will dream of that in LKY Stinkapore.

Taipei's traffic too congested with bikes. Makes car driving more hazardous than traffic with less bikes.
