Serie A : Catania Vs. Roma Suspended At 1-1 With 24 Minutes Left To Play

137008304_extra_large.jpg

Catania Vs. Roma : Match Suspended Due To Waterlogged Pitch, But Fun First Half Nevertheless

Catania
- AS Roma has been suspended with 24 minutes remaining, as rain continues to gush down in eastern Sicily. The score stays at 1-1 until the final minutes are replayed, which, from the sound of it, will be either February 8 or 15.

The first half was a game of missed chances, particularly by the home side. Pablo Barrientos put his header wide, but it was Gonzalo Bergessio who really should have scored. Juan's slip on the water-logged pitch left the Catania striker clear in the box, but Simon Kjær managed a terrific goal-line clearance. On the other end, Roma had a legitimate shout for a penalty after Aleandro Rosi was dragged down in the box, but Paolo Tagliavento barely batted an eye.

Catania broke the deadlock minutes later, when Nicola Legrottaglie
got his head on the end of a Francesco Lodi free kick. The ball slid off his hair and past a flat-footed Maarten Stekelenburg to give the rossazzurri a fleeting lead. Roma equalized in much the same manner, with Daniele De Rossi heading in a Francesco Totti corner.

For the final fifteen minutes of the first half, Catania rued chance after chance. Tagliavento very nearly assisted on a goal for the home side, but Roma were having none of that sort of help from the referee. Barrientos, Bergessio and Alejandro Gomez kept combining well, but just couldn't hit the high notes, with Bergessio hesitating just a second too long, arriving just an instant too late.

While rain seemed fun in the first half, creating a rather festive, fluid atmosphere, in the second it started to feel rather ominous. The ball stopped moving, the action seemed to be happening in slow-motion, and players kept skidding along the soggy pitch, picking up wedgies and who knows what other sorts of injuries. Tagliavento really had no choice but to call off the match, but you have to wonder how fair, exactly, will a 24 minute replay be -- to either side?

Serie A: Catania 1 Roma 1 (abandoned)

15 January 2012

12427320340.jpg

The only match in Serie A on Saturday was abandoned after 65 minutes due to torrential rain, with Catania and Roma level at 1-1.

Catania's Nicola Legrottaglie and Roma man Daniele De Rossi both rose highest at set pieces within four minutes of each other to send the tie into the interval deadlocked at a goal apiece.
However, with the weather worsening during the second half, referee Paolo Tagliavento made the decision to stop the match midway through the period as play had become impossible.

Earlier, the home side made a positive start as they looked to take the game to their opponents, with Gonzalo Bergessio's poor control costing his team's two half-chances.
The Argentine thought he had made amends in the 24th minute when a scramble in the box left him with an open goal, but Simon Kjaer did just enough to clear the ball off the line.

The respite proved to be momentary, and Catania deservedly took the lead only a minute later, as a free-kick by Francesco Lodi was glanced into the far corner by the head of Legrottaglie.
Roma were not fazed by the setback however, and drew level four minutes later through a set-piece of their own.

Francesco Totti's corner was met by De Rossi, who got enough direction on his header to take it past Catania goalkeeper Andrea Campagnolo.
Alejandro Gomez fashioned himself a great chance to restore Catania's advantage just before half-time, shimmying past two players in the box, but then somehow failed to find the target from eight yards out.

The downpour continued after the interval, and both sides were finding it difficult to string more than a handful of passes together, as the ball became bogged down in one of the many puddles that had formed on the pitch.
Consequently, chances were proving hard to come by, but Pablo Alvarez did go close in the 55th minute, letting fly from the edge of the area that flew just over the bar.

However, play would not continue for much longer as the waterlogged state of the pitch had seen the match descend into something of a farce.
Referee Tagliavento consulted with his officials and sent both teams back to the dressing rooms in the 65th minute. With the match suspended, the remaining 25 minutes will be played out at a later stage, the date of which is yet to be confirmed.

Roma's Luis Enrique in agreement with decision to abandon Catania match

The Spaniard is satisfied with the referee's decision to stop the game just after the 65-minute mark, but less so at the performance shown by his side at the Angelo Massimino

Roma coach Luis Enrique says the decision made by referee Paolo Tagliavento to abandon his team's match against Serie A rivals Catania on Saturday was the correct call.

Excessive heavy rainfall at the Angelo Massimino meant that the match could no longer continue with the score tied at 1-1, but the 41-year-old feels the threat of potential injuries was too much for the official to gamble.
"I'm sorry that the rain could not allow a smooth match," Luis Enrique told Sky Sport Italia.

"In addition there was the risk of injuries, so I think it's for the best that the match was postponed."

However, despite his calm demeanour, Luis Enrique proceeded to express his contempt at Roma's display in Sicily, where he felt his side made life for Catania too easy on too many occasions.

"We tried too hard to break through the middle. We committed so many mistakes and we had made too many risks in defence. The game was wide open before the abandonment," he concluded.

It has also been announced that the remaining 25 minutes will be played out during February.

AC Milan's Massimiliano Allegri: Derby victory could end Inter's Scudetto hopes

The former Cagliari man has urged his side to gain all three points against their local rivals this weekend in the hope of putting Inter out of the Scudetto race

AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri is looking for his team to defeat Inter in the Derby della Madonnina on Sunday in a bid to put Claudio Ranieri's men out of the title reckoning.

The reigning Serie A champions head into the weekend top of the league on goal difference, with Juventus just behind them.
Inter have been in superb form of late and are on a run of five consecutive wins, but Allegri believes a win for his men will leave Inter too far behind.

"The derby is always a tense affair and one that requires great concentration. We are not too far away from them in the table so we must try to win at all costs. After all, a victory would mean cutting down their chances of fighting for the Scudetto, so it is an important crossroads," Allegri told reporters in his press conference.

The former Cagliari man did praise Milan's rivals, highlighting Ranieri's influence on the team after such a dreadful start to the season.

"I think after the change of management from Gian Piero Gasperini to Claudio Ranieri that Inter changed their style of football. They are in good shape and have found balance to their team," he added.

Milan head into the game with a few injury concerns with Alberto Aquilani out for a month and Gennaro Gattuso still out with an eye condition so Allegri will need to reshuffle his team.

"Kevin-Prince Boateng did well there against Atalanta, while Urby Emanuelson is an option for the trequartista role. In fact, I could also field Pato, Robinho and Zlatan Ibrahimovic together," the coach state.

Allegri concluded the conference with a few words on what has been a stressful week with Alexandre Pato turning down a move to Paris Saint-Germain, leading to Carlos Tevez' apparent move to San Siro breaking down.

"This week has been rather eventful. I never said that I wanted to sell Pato. It was simply a transfer operation to replace Antonio Cassano. It's also not true that I have a cold rapport with Pato. With hom and the other players, I have a perfectly professional relationship," he said.

"It is only normal that he'll be on the bench sometimes, as everyone is. It's impossible to play every single game and nobody ever doubted his quality, Will Tevez arrive anyway? I don't know, I'm just focused on the derby."

Allegri recently signed a new contract with Milan, agreeing to extend his tenure until 2014.

Serie A wrap: Juventus held, Inter edge Milan

16 January 2012

12427320830.jpg

Juventus moved top of Serie A despite dropping points at home to Cagliari on Sunday, as Inter Milan beat champions AC Milan 1-0. Antonio Conte's Juve were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against 11th-placed Cagliari, despite taking a seventh-minute lead at Juventus Stadium.

Montenegro striker Mirko Vucinic tapped into an empty net to complete a fine team move that featured several short and sharp passes.
But despite Juve having several chances, the visitors took a point after attacker Andrea Cossu volleyed in a 48th-minute equaliser from 20 yards. In the late kick-off, Inter continued their revival under Claudio Ranieri with a narrow victory in the Milan derby.

A well-taken strike from Argentina international Diego Milito in the 54th minute of the match at San Siro proved the difference between the two teams.
Milito found the bottom corner of the net after seizing on an error from Milan fullback Ignazio Abate, who failed to intercept Javier Zanetti's crossfield pass.

The goal came largely against the run of play, with Milan dominating possession and enjoying the majority of the chances.
Mark van Bommel struck the crossbar during the first half, while Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Alexandre Pato threatened throughout, without success.Inter stay fifth following the win, but are now five points behind title-holders Milan, and just six points back from leaders Juve.

Elsewhere, Lazio secured a comfortable 2-0 win against Atalanta at the Stadio Olimpico.
Brazilian Hernanes' 20th-minute spot-kick and Miroslav Klose's neat finish in stoppage time were enough for Edy Reja's men, who played the majority of the second half against 10 men after Atalanta defender Stefano Lucchini was sent off.

Third-placed Udinese also dropped points, suffering a surprise 3-2 loss at Genoa.
Damiano Ferronetti gave Udinese the lead, but Genoa hit back after half-time as Andreas Granqvist, Bosko Jankovic and Rodrigo Palacio netted.Veteran forward Antonio Di Natale struck a 75th-minute penalty after Marco Rossi was sent off, but Udinese were unable to find an equaliser against 10 men.

Elsewhere, a goal from Paolo Sammarco led Chievo to a 1-0 win over Palermo, whose winless league run was extended to six matches.
Lecce recorded just their third league win of the season with a 1-0 victory over Fiorentina, Parma snapped a six-match winless league run with a 3-1 defeat of Siena and Adrian Mutu's brace helped Cesena beat Novara 3-1.

Inter Milan lodge €25m Tevez bid

Inter Milan president Massimi Moratti has confirmed he has now lodged a 25million euros bid for Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez.

Inter said last week they would not make any comment on the Tevez situation until after their Milan derby clash with rivals AC at the weekend. The Nerazzurri won the game 1-0 and straight after the game manager Claudio Ranieri and the club were quizzed about the Argentine.

Ranieri would not be drawn closely on the issue, but Moratti has wasted little time in confirming that they have now made a firm offer of just over £20million. "There are no secrets in football," Moratti told Controcampo.

"The offer is 25m euros. Now it is up to City whether they accept that bid or not." Moratti also admitted they were not the only club chasing Tevez, with PSG and also English clubs in the hunt. He added: "However, I do think that there are a number of other clubs who are interested in him. There are some English sides and also Paris St Germain."

The news of Inter's bid comes less than a week after AC withdrew from talks for Tevez after Alexandre Pato shunned a move to PSG.

"At this moment in time it seems that we don't need Tevez, but football gives a different answer on a daily basis," he continued.
"I would keep all of the players that are in the squad right now, but there is still time until the transfer window closes. We'll wait and see."

Inter coach Claudio Ranieri has been coy on his side's chances of striking a deal for Tevez until now. He told Sky Sport Italia after the Milan derby: "You never know. Do we really need him? You journalists certainly do..." Talking to Rai Sport, Ranieri said: "If he joins he'll be very welcome."

And in his press conference, Ranieri said, according to Inter's official website: "Tevez? If the president wants to give the city of Milan a present... I'm used to working with what I've got." The offer mentioned by Moratti converts to £20.7million.

City spent an estimated £25million on Tevez when signing the South American in 2009, paying the fee to his advisors to gain sole ownership rights following his spell at Manchester United.

Juventus fan puts Amauri up for sale on eBay

A frustrated Bianconeri supporter has decided to take matters into his own hands by trying to offload the striker to the highest bidder

Jan 17, 2012 3:15:00 PM

By Livio Caferoglu

104936hp2.jpg

A Juventus fan received bids of up to €10 million for an eBay listing that advertised the services of Amauri.

The Turin outfit have been unable to offload the unwanted forward, who arrived from Palermo in 2008 for €22.8 million but has been deemed surplus to requirements by coach Antonio Conte.

Amauri, who is currently earning €70,000-a-week at Juve, despite not playing a single match this season, has seen potential moves to Genoa and Fiorentina collapse, paving the way for one particular supporter to go as far as creating an eBay auction to dispose of him.
Shortly before it was withdrawn by the auction website, the advert had fetched 78 bids, with a €10m offer leading the race.

In addition, Amauri's advert included free postage for the player and an estimated delivery time of four working days, while refunds were not accepted.

The winning bidder would have also netted a freebie in the form of Juve full-back Paolo De Ceglie.

Juventus dismiss claims Arturo Vidal was involved in match-fixing during win against Cesena

The Old Lady have released a statement backing the Chile international, who is alleged to have colluded with Seahorses defender Guillermo Rodriguez before his penalty

Jan 17, 2012 2:15:00 PM

<iframe width="640" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/ZPezUN9cJBA?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe>

Juventus have dismissed reports suggesting Arturo Vidal could have been involved in a match-fixing scheme with Cesena's Guillermo Rodriguez earlier this season.

The Uruguayan defender replaced Francesco Antonioli in goal after the shot-stopper was sent off prior to Vidal's penalty kick during the Old Lady's win in December, and then appeared to have nodded in the direction to which he would dive. Vidal's shot to the opposite side wrapped up the 2-0 victory.
However, Juve have rejected the allegations, which have surfaced from a YouTube video in recent days, and insist they will do their utmost to defend the player.

"The recent circulation of footage concerning the penalty struck and scored by Arturo Vidal in the Juventus v Cesena encounter, which according to some reveals a gesture of agreement between the Cesena player tasked with stopping the penalty and the Bianconeri midfielder, constitutes a clumsy and underhanded attempt at defamation," read the statement on the club's official website on Tuesday.

"Juventus Football Club will act accordingly in order to protect the image of both the club and Arturo Vidal."

It is not the first time Vidal has attracted controversy this season, as he was hit with a 10-game ban from the Chile national team after turning up to training in an inadequate state, along with four other players, ahead of the World Cup qualifier with Uruguay in November.

The Juventus centre-midfield targets for January featuring Guarin & Nainggolan, and the player they should sign

The Bianconeri are looking to reinforce the heart of their side this month, but of all the proposed signings, we take a look at who would best suit what coach Antonio Conte needs

In Juventus' 18-match unbeaten run in 2011-12, the one area that has come under the microscope only fleetingly has been the midfield. The impact of summer arrivals Andrea Pirlo and Arturo Vidal, plus the best goalscoring run of Claudio Marchisio's career, has all combined to form a steady base at the heart of the team.

However, in his push to ensure that his side can stay the course in the Scudetto race, the Bianconeri coach Antonio Conte has asked for further reinforcements in the centre, and the club's hierarchy have been linked with moves for a number of extra central midfielders.

But of those targets, who would best suit the Old Lady? Below, we have a look at the players linked with a move to Turin and make a judgement on which one Juventus should buy.

The Swiss has been a first-choice starter for Fiorentina since returning to Serie A this time last year following two-and-half years in the Premier League with West Ham. Playing largely on the right side of a midfield three in the Viola's 3-5-2, he has been a steady if unspectacular presence.

Having spent much of his time at Lazio as a right-back following Massimo Oddo's move to AC Milan, he hasn't always looked at ease in the less dynamic midfield role since arriving at the Artemio Franchi. But with the Viola going through a difficult spell, a move to the currently-thriving Juve could be just what he needs.

The Colombian has become hot property since his form in Porto's run to the Europa League final in 2011, with his game-winning assist for Radamel Falcao's only goal giving the Portuguese side a deserved trophy. He then started every game as his national side reached the quarter-finals of the Copa America after topping Argentina's group.

Much of his 2011-12 campaign has been taken up by transfer talk, with Juve by far and away the most interested club, but the deal looked to be off when the Old Lady started pursuing Martin Caceres. However, Guarin could still be the one extracomunitario that they plump for, as Conte's preoccupation with adding a dynamic midfielder becomes of greater importance.

The Swiss-Serb has enjoyed a new lease of life since moving to the Bundesliga in 2009. Having been largely a defensive midfielder for Fiorentina after his signing from Basel, his €8m move to Germany has seen him develop into a more rounded midfielder, with a goals record belying his previous role as the pivot in the centre.

In looking to make the most of his developing reputation, Kuzmanovic would surely be tempted by the overtures of Juventus. But the Old Lady's initial interest in his signature has seemingly died down, with many other targets being pursued since they were linked with the 43-cap Serbian international, and Lazio are now showing some interest in being the club to bring him back to Serie A.

While many of Juve's targets have made, or boosted, reputations elsewhere, Belgian midfielder Nainggolan has come up through the ranks of Italian football to become one of the hottest properties on the peninsula. After leaving Germinal Beerschot's youth ranks for Piacenza, the player of Indonesian heritage was picked up by Cagliari two years ago and has recently been linked with both Milan sides as well as the Old Lady.

Possessing the quality and attributes to play in any of the three centre-midfield berths, his value has sky-rocketed during a spell in which he has become the Rossoblu's most irreplaceable first-teamer. Recently picked out as a star in the making, it would be hard to knock Juventus for making the move to add Nainggolan to their midfield stock.

Now in his 10th season with Sampdoria, Palombo is developing a reputation as one of the Blucerchiati's most loyal servants of recent times. However, their struggles in Serie B this term have given admirers added impetus in their belief that he could yet be dragged away from the fallen Ligurian giants.

The 22-cap Italian international has fallen off the radar somewhat since his side's fall from grace in the past 12 months, but after turning down a move back to Fiorentina last summer he could well use this month's window as the chance to show he can still do something at the top level. Largely used as an organiser and a cool head, Palombo would probably be best suited as an alternative to Pirlo.

The Chilean has become peripheral to plans at Roma this season, with new coach Luis Enrique looking to bring more youth into the side. Despite Pizarro's all-round qualities alongside Daniele De Rossi in the middle, he has experienced his most difficult spell in the capital to date.

The former Inter man was linked with a move to Turin before the talk of Nainggolan first came about, and things have died down somewhat since then, but he should not be ruled out as a potential arrival given that Conte would very much welcome such a versatile addition. Age may be the only thing against him, given his notable seniority within the group of targets.

THE VERDICT

<tbody>
</tbody>

While Pizarro's age will no doubt count against him in the final decision, it shouldn't be forgotten what Pirlo's know-how and experience has brought to the table. However, Nainggolan's quality would be a fantastic addition to the mix in midfield, and with Milan and Inter also sniffing around the Belgian, keeping a player of such potential away from your biggest rivals should also be taking into account when making such decisions.

Kuzmanovic and Behrami have flattered at times in their Serie A careers, while Palombo has seen better days. Guarin should be taken seriously as an option, but the decision must be made whether Caceres and a different midfielder would be a better January buy, given that they could potentially sign the Colombian in the summer.

All things considered, now might well be the right time to sign Nainggolan, who will give them options in all three central spots.

Napoli's Aurelio De Laurentiis keen for coach Walter Mazzarri to take on Sir Alex Ferguson-like role at San Paolo

The Partenopei supremo has admitted that the pair have discussed the possibility of the former Sampdoria boss talking on more responsibilities within the side

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has revealed that he is considering allocating coachWalter Mazzarri the same level of control over the club that Sir Alex Ferguson enjoys withManchester United.

The Partenopei supremo admitted that the pair have discussed the possibility of the former Sampdoria boss taking on a more managerial role.

"It would not displease Mazzarri to become involved in the interests of the club beyond the role of coach," De Laurentiis told Corriere dello Sport.

"If this were to happen, together we could choose a coach who could give continuity to his work.

With that in mind, De Laurentiis explained that Mazzarri is likely to extend his stay at the San Paolo.

"Mazzarri will remain beyond June 2013? Why not? He does not have any issues with continuing and I have also worked in film industry for 10 years with the same people.

"I like Mazzarri as a person, because he is cold-blood like me, a hard worker and a morally impenetrable man."

Meanwhile, it was reported earlier this week that Napoli’s star striker Edinson Cavani was offered to Paris Saint-Germain, but De Laurentiis insisted that he has no intention of selling the Uruguayan to the ambitious Ligue 1 outfit, or Ezequiel Lavezzi or Marek Hamsik for that matter.

"To buy our players is difficult for everyone, including the sheiks," he declared. "Those three [Cavani, Lavezzi and Hamsik] are our jewels, and I'm not a jeweller, but an entrepreneur ...

"Cavani was offered by his agent to PSG? I've always said that the evil in football are the agents.

"It’s necessary to define their role because they cannot go around offering players that are under contract.

"[As for] Lavezzi, [Inter president Massimo] Moratti asked me about him two seasons ago, but I told him I would not sell.”

Napoli are currently sixth in Serie A and next month take on Chelsea in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Hector Cuper has admitted accepting €200,000 from two affiliates of the Camorra, but denied that the money was related to match-fixing.

The experienced coach has been accused of agreeing to influence the outcome of a total of four games, two in Spain and two in his native Argentina.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, prosecutors investigating global betting syndicates allege that two suspected associates of the Naples-based Mafia flew to Spain to meet with Cuper while he was still in charge of Racing Santander.

It is claimed that the men then handed over €200,000, which had been hidden in socks and underwear, to the coach, who in turn presented the pair with a piece of paper with the results of four games written on it.

Cuper has confessed to accepting the money, but that "it [the money] was for my mother-in-law and given to renovate her home."

The former Inter boss is under investigation, because one of the games he allegedly agreed to help fix did not yield the anticipated result, and that led to an argument between the two criminals over the phone, and this was recorded by the authorities.

The probe originally surfaced in Italy last year, after investigators were alerted to unusually large sums of money being gambled on certain games by punters.

Serie A preview: Forlan out for in-form Inter as Juve seek to retain lead

19 January 2012

12427322610.jpg

Inter Milan host Lazio on the back of six straight wins in the Serie A on Sunday, without the services of injured striker Diego Forlan. The Uruguayan, who missed 10 weeks from October with an injured hamstring, was on his way back to fitness, having made four league starts since December, but has suffered another setback with a suspected injured thigh.

Claudio Ranieri's men moved to within six points of leaders Juventus with a crucial 1-0 win over rivals AC Milan last Sunday and will displace Lazio in fourth if they take all three points at the San Siro. Inter's purple patch has seen them take all 18 points from their past six starts in the league, where they have scored 14 and conceded only one goal, a run that has catapulted them up to fifth in the table from as low as 16th on December 4.

In more good news for Inter this week, Brazilian defender Thiago Silva was named in UEFA's Team of the Year for 2011, the only Serie A representative in the side.AC Milan, who complained of Inter's defensive tactics in their derby win, bounced back from the loss with a 2-1 extra time win over Novara in the Coppa Italia on Wednesday.

Alexandre Pato, the player Milan were prepared to part ways with during the week in order to lure Carlos Tevez to the club, responded with the decisive goal nine minutes into extra time. However in the league, Milan are now a point behind new leaders Juventus and travel to face Novara again, without versatile midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng after he suffered a thigh strain against Inter.

Juventus travel to Atalanta on Saturday on the back of a disappointing 1-1 draw with mid-table Cagliari last start, a result that gave hope to the other sides still in the hunt for the title.Udinese have the chance to challenge Juventus and AC Milan as they host Catania on Sunday. The third-placed club dropped three points behind the leaders after their 3-2 loss away to Genoa last Sunday.

Roma's Daniele De Rossi is a doubt for their match with Cesena on Saturday as he struggles to shake off a muscle injury.Bologna host Parma at the Stadio Renato Dall'Ara in the other game on Saturday.Siena president Massimo Mezzaroma has warned the club's lowly position does not guarantee Napoli the three points when they visit on Sunday. Siena have won just one of their past nine matches.

In other games on Sunday, Cagliari host Fiorentina in a mid-table battle, struggling Lecce entertain Chievo and Palermo tackle Genoa.
