Sir Alex Ferguson takes Manchester United players on golfing mini-break to escape title pressure

Red Devils boss makes unprecedented move to head for weekend retreat at this stage of run-in, with some of younger players said to be "on edge"

Manchester United’s players have been taken to a golfing retreat in Scotland for the weekend to escape the title pressure.

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson has decided to take his squad on a mini-break to his homeland because he is said to feel that some of the younger players “are on edge” as the battle for Premier League supremacy with rivals Manchester City hots up.

The United players and backroom staff were due to fly to Scotland on Friday and return on Sunday night, when they will head directly to the team hotel to prepare for Monday’s trip to Blackburn Rovers.

Sources have said that the players were told by staff to bring in their luggage to the training ground on Friday morning because they were going on a mini-break.

“Initially the players thought they might be going to somewhere exotic like Dubai,” a source told Goal.com. “But half the squad were told they were going to Gleneagles and the other half to St Andrews.

“Fergie wanted to keep the players guessing a bit because he wants complete isolation and for the trip to be away from the prying eyes of the media.

"The trip will involve a bit of training, some golf, and some rest and recuperation to relax the players ahead of the run-in"

“The trip will involve a bit of training, some golf, and some rest and recuperation to relax the players ahead of the run-in.”

Intriguingly, United sources say that it is unprecedented for Ferguson to take his players away for a mini-break at this stage of the title race.

“It is the first time in a title run-in that the manager has felt the need to take the pressure off like this,” a source added. “No-one has ever known anything like it. There was just a feeling among some of the staff that the younger players are on edge.”

The Fulham match on Monday, when United stuttered to a 1-0 victory after being fortunate not to concede a late penalty, was the first indication that some of the players may be starting to feel the pressure.

It comes at a time when increasingly terse words are being traded across Manchester between the two title-chasing clubs.

Patrick Vieira, Manchester City’s director of football development, has irked United in the last week by calling Paul Scholes’s return from retirement a “sign of weakness” before shifting the spotlight to the club’s treatment at the hands of referees.

Ferguson has hit back at the claim by saying City have enjoyed their own luck with decisions and suggesting the Frenchman is risking sanctions if he continues to talk about referees.

WAGs: Chantelle Tagoe, Coleen Rooney, Ellie Jenas & others in quotes

In today's edition we are dealt a couple of corking lines, praise for Celebrity Juice, not knowing what day of the week it is and a rare picture of Kaka's wife

Mar 30, 2012 3:42:00 PM

176277hp2.jpg

Well today I can bring you a couple of excellent jokes from our WAGs. At least I think they're jokes...

Chantelle Tagoe, wife of Emile Heskey sent the following tweet last night. I assume it's a tongue in cheek joke as all anyone has been talking about in the last week has been the proposed petrol strikes across the country. Over to you Tagoe:

"Why r the petrol stations so busy? Av i missed somethin?"

Um.

The second comes via Ellie Jenas. Again, I assume this is tongue in cheek:

"Love this weather makes me miss going to the games, can't wait to see @jjenas8 playing again x"

We can! We can definitely wait for that one to be honest... I'm not sure if Jenas even knows how to play anymore anyway.

Now yesterday we noticed a couple of tweets from Ludivine Sagna about taking her kids to the Arshavin's for a birthday party - presumably for their kid/s.

176279hp2.jpg

Now at the time, we thought 'but Arshavin's in Russia isn't he?' but it turns out today's revelation from Ludivine is even better than that:

"OMG it was wrong date.I went in central with the 2 kids for nothing .want a cry lol"

"And elias who tell me"mummy I prefer to be in the car with daddy, the music is better"

Poor Ludivine! She wants a cry. Ahhh, we quite like her over at Extra Time, but even she can't get away with such absent-mindedness!

Coleen Rooney likes 'Celebrity Juice' apparently. That's about as interesting as her tweets get to be honest. Unless you like fashion. We don't. We just stick with our 'Why Always Me?' t-shirts.

"Celeb juice makes me giggle!!!"

Enter Wayne:

"Watching celeb juice. Keith lemon is the funniest man alive. Hilarious."

More funny that Roy Keane? NEVER!

Kaka's wife Caroline Celico sent a photo via Twitter today. This is a rare thing, so here you go:

176278hp2.jpg

And finally for our daily Sylvie Van der Vaart section, she's prepping the household for the Easter Bunny:

"Doing Easter shopping.. Damian is already excited and curious what the easter bunny will bring for him"

I've heard he's going to bring little Damian tickets to the FA Cup Final to watch his daddy play....

Have a good weekend!

Ferguson: Blackburn fans must regret Steve Kean protests

Rovers supporters campaigned throughout the start of the season for the Scotsman's removal, but the club have now pulled cleared of the relegation zone by three points

Mar 31, 2012 9:30:00 AM

By Andrew Kennedy

155709hp2.jpg

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson believes Blackburn Rovers supporters must regret their campaign earlier in the season to remove manager Steve Kean.

The club’s fans routinely protested before and during games, and there was even a plane trailing a banner calling for the 44-year-old to be sacked flying over Ewood Park during the clash with Chelsea back in November.

However, owners Venky’s refused to bow to pressure and Kean has since guided Blackburn out of the relegation zone to 16th place in the table, and Sir Alex has praised his fellow Scotsman’s efforts.

"You know how things can change if you dig in and don't let them get to you," the United boss said.

"Now no-one talks about those fans having protests, marches and all the rest of it.

"He's held his dignity very, very well. He deserves absolute 100 per cent praise from everyone, including his own supporters, who I'm sure a lot of them will be saying to themselves, 'I wish I hadn't done that'.

"He's certainly shown his mettle in those times when it was difficult for him.”

The Red Devils travel to Ewood Park to face Rovers on Monday evening, and the 70-year-old expects a tough task at a ground where they have struggled in recent seasons, while Blackburn secured a shock 3-2 win at Old Trafford earlier in the campaign.

"They've made it difficult for us in recent games. When they score first, they make it hard for you and we've had a couple of draws there."

Premier League Weekend Team News

A round-up of team news ahead of this weekend's Premier League fixtures.

Aston Villa vs Chelsea

Captain Stiliyan Petrov will miss Aston Villa's home game with Chelsea after the shock news that he has been diagnosed with acute leukaemia. Alan Hutton (calf) is also out, with Eric Lichaj and Chris Herd in contention to replace the Scotland international, while Charles N'Zogbia (knee) will be out for a further month. Striker Darren Bent (ankle), defender Richard Dunne (shoulder) and midfielder Fabian Delph (ankle) remain long-term absentees, while utility player Ciaran Clark is still recovering from a knee problem.

Midfielder Raul Meireles is Chelsea's only doubt after sustaining a knee injury in Tuesday night's 1-0 victory over Benfica. Branislav Ivanovic and Ramires have been passed fit after overcoming minor knocks.

Everton vs West Brom

Everton are likely to be without midfielders Jack Rodwell (hamstring), Seamus Coleman (thigh) and Royston Drenthe (leave). On-loan midfielder Steven Pienaar returns after being ineligible for the midweek FA Cup replay victory at Sunderland.

West Brom will be without injured midfielder James Morrison, who is likely to be missing for the remainder of the season after suffering knee ligament damage during last weekend's home reversal against Newcastle. Paul Scharner and Graham Dorrans will be in contention to replace the Scotland international. Midfielder Zoltan Gera (knee) and right-back Steven Reid (foot) remain long-term absentees.

Fulham vs Norwich

Fulham manager Martin Jol has recalled midfielder Alex Kacaniklic from his loan spell at Watford and he goes straight into the squad to face Norwich. The Cottagers have no fresh injury concerns with Neil Etheridge (wrist), Zdenek Grygera (knee), Steve Sidwell (hernia) and Orlando Sa (hamstring) all still on the sidelines.

Norwich captain Grant Holt will serve a one-match suspension having been sent off after scoring a brace in the Canaries' home win over Wolves last weekend. Winger Anthony Pilkington (hamstring) is doubtful, while defenders Marc Tierney (groin) and Daniel Ayala (knee) continue their rehabilitation towards full match fitness, along with striker James Vaughan (knee).

Man City vs Sunderland

Manchester City will again be without top scorer Sergio Aguero due to a foot injury, although manager Roberto Mancini would shed no light on the nature of the problem. Captain Vincent Kompany (calf) is expected to return after four games out but fellow defender Joleon Lescott (groin) remains sidelined. Striker Carlos Tevez is again set to start on the bench.

Sunderland boss Martin O'Neill will be without left-back Wayne Bridge, who is ineligible under the terms of his loan agreement. Midfielder Jack Colback, who missed the 2-0 FA Cup defeat by Everton in midweek to attend the birth of his first child, has played in defence this season and could deputise, but central defender John O'Shea (calf) is out and midfielder Lee Cattermole is a doubt with a twisted knee.

QPR vs Arsenal

QPR striker Djibril Cisse will begin his four-match ban when Arsenal visit Loftus Road. The France international was sent off at former club Sunderland last weekend and is joined on the sidelines by Armand Traore, who is a week away from returning from a hamstring injury. Long-term absentees DJ Campbell (hamstring) and Heidar Helguson (knee) are not yet ready for a first-team return.

Arsenal will have centre-half Laurent Koscielny available following a knee problem. Midfielder Abou Diaby (hamstring) is not expected to be back in contention, but like Francis Coquelin (hamstring) is close to match fitness. Centre-back Per Mertesacker (ankle) and midfielder Jack Wilshere (ankle) remain sidelined.

Wigan vs Stoke

Wigan hope forward Victor Moses will be fit after scans revealed he did not break his jaw last week. Midfielder Mohamed Diame (groin) and striker Hugo Rodallega (knee) only have outside chances of playing, however. Midfielder David Jones (knee) is now back in contention while third-choice goalkeeper Mike Pollitt (shoulder) is also training again.

Stoke striker Ricardo Fuller could return having completed a three-match suspension. Jonathan Woodgate may feature in the Potters' matchday squad for the first time in more than a month after recovering from a calf problem and fellow defender Robert Huth should be fit despite suffering a leg knock, but midfielder Salif Diao (hamstring) remains sidelined.

Wolves vs Bolton

Wolves boss Terry Connor will check on the fitness of key midfielder Karl Henry before finalising his side. Henry has returned to training after four weeks out of action with a hamstring setback. Fellow midfielder David Davis is making good progress from a rib injury and defender Ronald Zubar will be back in contention after being suspended for the defeat at Norwich last weekend.

Bolton manager Owen Coyle is likely to freshen up his side. Midfielder Darren Pratley is ruled out after suffering a gashed leg during the 3-1 defeat by Tottenham in Tuesday's rearranged FA Cup quarter-final, but David Wheater could return after being rested. Fabrice Muamba remains in hospital following his cardiac arrest in the original tie at White Hart Lane.

Newcastle vs Liverpool

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew will be boosted by the returns of Cheick Tiote and Ryan Taylor from hamstring and calf injuries, respectively. However, central defender and captain Fabricio Coloccini is out with a torn hamstring, joining long-term absentees Peter Lovenkrands (thigh), Leon Best, Sammy Ameobi (both knee), Steven Taylor (Achilles) and Sylvain Marveaux (groin) on the casualty list.

Liverpool midfielder Charlie Adam will miss out as he must wait a fortnight for further assessment of a knee problem. Manager Kenny Dalglish is hopeful some of his other players will be fit to return,
however, with defenders Glen Johnson (calf), Martin Kelly (ankle) and Daniel Agger (rib) all missing for last weekend's defeat to Wigan. Midfielder Maxi Rodriguez has recovered from the illness but forward Craig Bellamy (calf) has missed four successive matches.

Blackburn vs Man Utd

Defender Gael Givet is again Blackburn's only doubt ahead of their clash with leaders Manchester United. Givet aggravated a slight hamstring problem while warming up during Rovers' victory over Sunderland earlier this month.

Rio Ferdinand will be fit for Manchester United, even though the defender had to be replaced during this week's win over Fulham with a back problem. Nani (ankle) is still sidelined, along with long-term absentees Michael Owen, Anders Lindegaard, Anderson, Nemanja Vidic and Darren Fletcher.

Tottenham vs Swansea

Winger Aaron Lennon (hamstring) is expected to make his return from a three-week layoff for Tottenham. Ledley King (knee) may miss out after playing in Tuesday's win over Bolton but long-term absentees Michael Dawson (ankle), goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes (knee) and midfielder Tom Huddlestone (ankle) are out.

Swansea manager Brendan Rodgers has Nathan Dyer back from a three-match suspension and he will compete with Wayne Routledge for the right wing spot. Midfielder Andrea Orlandi has stepped up his recovery from a hamstring injury after featuring for the reserves on Thursday, but the visit to White Hart Lane comes too soon for him.

Back in 2010 Andy Carroll was making a name for himself in Newcastle as a young confident goal scorer, taking the promotion from the championship and premier league football in his stride. With the world at it his feet and the Geordies beloved number 9 shirt, Carroll had the potential to become a Newcastle Legend.

However a record breaking 35 million pound deal in the January of 2011 saw a shock move for the Geordie to Anfield. Since joining Liverpool Carroll has failed to match his potential only scoring eight goals in 47 appearances, and led to many Scousers question his ability. Carroll returns to his beloved St James Park on Sunday and has admitted in the Journal his nerves before his return.

“I don’t usually get nervous but this might be a bit different, all of my family and friends will be there but they’re so big on football I’m not sure who they’ll be supporting”

Carroll has admitted he is glad to see his local team doing so well this season and admits “they will always mean something to me”. Newcastle currently sit in 6th place in the premier league 8 points higher than Liverpool and seem to have found a replacement goalscorers for Carroll in Ba and Cisse. With a number of Liverpool fans starting to question if Carroll fits with their style of play, many believe Carroll would have been happier to staying at his local club.

Balotelli and Yaya Toure involved in dressing room bust-up - report

The pair reportedly had to be pulled apart following Saturday's draw with Sunderland at Etihad Stadium which saw Mancini's men los further ground in the Premier League title race

176543hp2.jpg

Manchester City duo Mario Balotelli and Yaya Toure were involved in a furious dressing room bust-up following Saturday's 3-3 draw with Sunderland, according to The Daily Telegraph.

The Italian striker had already clashed with team-mates on the field at Etihad Stadium over a free-kick which was eventually taken by Aleksandar Kolarov.

The 21-year-old had a heated exchange with the full-back before being led away by captain Vincent Kompany.

It is reported that Balotelli stormed down the tunnel after the game to confront Yaya Toure and the pair were involved in a huge row before being separated by the Ivorian’s brother, Kolo.

The duo had previously clashed in City’s defeat to Swansea earlier in the month, and the 21-year-old has also reportedly been involved in training ground spats with Micah Richards and former Blues defender Jerome Boateng.

Despite the former Inter man scoring twice in the game against the Black Cats, boss Roberto Mancini revealed he was close to substituting Balotelli.

He also admitted he cannot trust the striker amid reports that City are prepared to listen to offers for him in the summer.

Carroll launched foul-mouthed tirade at Dalglish in Newcastle defeat - report

The England international aimed abuse at the Scot after being substituted in a frustrating return to his former club in which he was mocked by the home fans and booked for diving

Apr 2, 2012 9:20:00 AM

176689hp2.jpg

Liverpool striker Andy Carroll fired a foul-mouthed tirade at boss Kenny Dalglish as he was substituted in Sunday’s 2-0 defeat to Newcastle, according to the Daily Mirror.

The England international endured a miserable return to Tyneside in his first game back at the Sports Direct Arena since his £35 million move from the Magpies last January.

The England international was booed by the home crowd and was widely mocked after seeing yellow for a dive in the first half.

His woes were compounded when he was subbed in the second half and, as he walked down the tunnel, he allegedly let rip with a volley of abuse towards his manager.

He said: “F****** joke this, f****** shit, f*** off,” in the direction of Dalglish who was standing in the technical area on the touchline.

The former Newcastle No.9 watched on as the new incumbent to the shirt, Papiss Cisse, scored twice in the game to put the Reds to the sword.

Carroll also clashed with his old team-mates and manager Alan Pardew after falling in the area untouched by onrushing goalkeeper Tim Krul.

After being booked by referee Martin Atkinson, the 23-year-old berated the Magpies boss saying: “It wasn’t a dive you f****** c***.”

The striker was later defended by Kenny Dalglish who said: “It wasn’t a penalty kick. I also thought Andy was losing his balance anyway.”

Too strung out on compliments, overdosed on confidence? Balotelli pictured with Drake as Manchester City team head to rapper's concert

As supporters mourn the death of their title bid, Roberto Mancini's players choose to sooth their own hurting with a concert at the MEN Arena

Apr 3, 2012 9:00:00 AM

176901hp2.jpg

We can't put our finger on it, but there's something inherently cool about seeing the world's best-known rapper and most controversial, headline-generating footballer enjoy an evening together.

Canadian rapper Drake has been the talk of the urban music scene for the past few weeks as his sell-out UK tour reached Manchester and this Sunday night he had half of Roberto Mancini's first team attend a gig at the MEN Arena.

Drake has professed his allegiance to Manchester United in the past as well as his love for the video game, FIFA, in an interview with Rio Ferdinand, but was seemingly delighted to have the City players present.

As you would now come to expect, Mario Balotelli made the headlines and reportedly Drake announced the Italian's name to the crowd during his set. Perhaps the City fans were too downbeat to go out for the second time that weekend though as reports suggest Drake received a host of boos for mentioning Balotelli's name.

We're not too pleased to hear that. But despite that obvious setback, Canada's greatest contribution to music since Bryan Adams valiantly completed his set and went on to meet Super Mario after the show.

176916hp2.jpg

Regardless, the real interest came hours later as a couple of photos emerged of Balotelli with Drake in an Indian and Pakistani restaurant called Zouk. The speculative tweeters suggested Balotelli was holding a hookah pipe as well which to be fair wouldn't be that unusual given his self-confessed smoking habit.

176902hp2.jpg

Frame it | The only known photo of Balotelli smiling

Among those City players attending were Micah Richards, Nigel De Jong, Joe Hart, Gael Clichy, Adam Johnson and Joleon Lescott. Other Premier League stars also attended and ex-City winger Shaun Wright-Phillips was spotted with Jermaine Pennant and Kenwyne Jones.

176917hp2.jpg

Micah | The hippest hipster?

Johnson and Clichy both arrived with WAGs on their arm and embarrassingly for Extra Time, we can't tag a name to them just yet. Don't fear though, we'll get to the bottom of this.

176915hp2.jpg

Nelly? | Didn't that US rapper have a plaster where Clichy's birth-mark is? Hmmm...

Wenger fumes as Chamakh is spotted with shisha pipe after loss to QPR

The Moroccan striker was photographed alongside Adel Taarabt, who scored the opening goal against Arsenal in Saturday's loss and the Frenchman is thought to be far from pleased

Apr 3, 2012 12:21:00 PM

176976hp2.jpg

Reports have surfaced suggesting Arsene Wenger is fuming at the sight of his Moroccan striker Marouane Chamakh handling a shisha pipe.

The photo was taken on Saturday evening after Arsenal's loss to QPR in the Premier League and shows Chamakh accompanied by fellow Moroccan Adel Taarabt.

Taarabt, of course, helped inflict a 2-1 defeat on Wenger's side with a fine solo goal in the first half, whereas Chamakh, was, well, sitting on the bench.

The Moroccan striker, signed from Bordeaux two years ago, has played just nine Premier League games this year - with the majority of them being substitute appearances.

Apparently, Robin van Persie is quite good at the moment, so that could explain why Chamakh's has been on the fringes of the first team since arriving at Arsenal. Or it could be that he just struggles to score - he has a measly 12 in 61 for the Gunners.

176489hp2.jpg

Throwing statistics to one side though, Wenger can not be pleased to see his favourite benchwarmer fraternising with the enemy on a Saturday night. Particularly if he is smoking a shisha pipe.

176500hp2.jpg

Taarabt meanwhile, has probably earned a bit of knees up fun given he bagged his first goal of the season on Saturday. The talismanic midfielder admitted today that his head had not been fully focused on the Rs this year. He's alright now though. And just in time for a relegation scrap.

Manchester City star Balotelli admits to fling with escort linked to Wayne Rooney

The controversial Italian has seen his off-field actions catch up with him once again as his agent confirms a previous dalliance with the woman once connected to the England man

Apr 4, 2012 3:08:00 PM

By James Goldman

173468hp2.jpg

Manchester City’s flagging bid for the Premier League title has been further undermined by their maverick striker Mario Balotelli who on Wednesday admitted to bedding the same escort who had an affair with Wayne Rooney.

Balotelli, who was chided by his manager, Roberto Mancini, following an on-field bust-up with team-mate Aleksandar Kolarov during last weekend’s damaging 3-3 draw against Sunderland, revealed that he had a “brief involvement” with prostitute Jenny Thompson but withheld the details of when the relationship took place and for how long it lasted.

The forward’s agent, Mino Raiola, conceded that his client, who is currently dating Italian model Raffaella Fico, was a “young and impulsive football player who has been targeted by a number of women looking to make money from him”.

He added: “We therefore wish to confirm that Mario has had a brief involvement with Miss Jennifer Thompson.

“Mario prefers to admit what has happened, has refused any means on offer to try to keep the matter silent and will deal with any consequences his actions bring in the way of public attention.

“However, he prefers to deal with his personal life in private and had told those close to him about this situation prior to any suggestion of this matter becoming public.”

Thompson, who is being represented by renowned PR guru Max Clifford, was infamously linked with Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney prior to England’s shambolic 2010 World Cup campaign.

Balotelli’s latest off-field indiscretion will come as a further blow to the authority of Mancini, who has seen his side slip five points off the pace in the race for their first top-flight title in 44 years.

Welcome to the party: Camel spotted joining Rooney birthday celebrations

The Arabian-themed party was held at the couple's house over the weekend for Coleen's 26th birthday and the animal was giving guests a ride around the garden

If you're a multi-million pound footballer with a wife that probably has everything, what do you buy them? Well, if you're using the Wayne Rooney book of birthday presents: a camel!

The even-toed ungulate (thanks Wikipedia) was photographed on a nearby street headed to the Arabian-themed party. Unsurprisingly, it didn't look too pleased to be snapped and there are rumours it spat in the direction of the photographer...

Coleen was celebrating her 26th birthday and had 'a brilliant time' according to her Twitter account.

The Sun reported that guests were allowed to climb aboard the camel and take a ride around the Rooneys' garden.

An onlooker added: "All the guests were dressed head to toe in amazing bright-coloured Arabian costumes with head dresses on."
